Dimensions of posts
« on: March 24, 2012, 08:26:52 PM »
Hi, can anyone explain why just occaisionally I open a post and it is far larger than my screen? Marinemole's present posting about Flying Scotsman is a case in point. When I open that I have to scroll sideways back and forth to read each line and the pictures are already full size or even too big to view all at once. This only happens on perhaps one post in twenty. Any ideas why? Thanks, Ian.

Noticed that myself. Can't think of anything different that I did when posting. An identical post in another forum seems OK.

I usually standardise now on Photobucket at 1200 x900, reasoning that most computer set ups will cater for this comfortably. Using Photobucket means I'm not using up disk allocation on the Forum but I guess that it does mean increased bandwidth. It is possible to switch to thumbnails but this means that the picture opens up in a Photobucket window.

The other option is to forget Photobucket and attach the files to the post which will display as clickable thumbnails opening the picture within the body of the post.

Grateful for feedback.

I think your choice of pixel size is the reason.

I always use Microsoft Office Picture Manager which has a 'resize' option. With this I use 'Large Email' size (640 x 480 pixels) when I post on here. There are other sizes, some larger offered as well.

Cheers...Bernie

Thanks for the feedback Bernie. I actually do resize the pictures as I shoot at 3648 x 2736. Sometimes I crop then resize.

If there is a body of opinion that the pics are too big I'll reduce for this forum.

The thing that I do not understand is the the problem applies to the text of the post as well as to photos. On these large posts (an Marinemole's are not the only ones) I cannot read each line of text without scrolling back and  forth sideways which is more annoying than the photos which do not cause as much of a problem. Cheers, Ian.

On the 'Post Reply' screen there are numerous icons at the top which I have never used......although a certain somebody makes copious use of the faces!!!

Is it possible that both the font size is set high or/and that the 'insert image' causes the picture to be in put at original pixel size?

Hi All PD's

if there are no pictures in the posting then the text should always format to the size of your browser horizontally.  this is of course dependant on which browser you use.  if you  internet explorer then most of the early versions are unable to fully read modern web scripts, but do the best they can.

On pictures i personally re-size to 800/600 on websites using an application called faststone available free from http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm  it is also able to watermark your pictures.   Why 800/600 for me its because all computer screens will be able to read this size without having to horizontally scroll, it also makes for quicker webpage loads for people with slower connections. I am lucky enough to have a wide screen monitor so do not suffer too badly from this, but am conscious of people using laptops etc with smaller screens.

If a large picture is anythere on a posting visible on the page you are viewing then this will create the need for horizontal scrolling and the text will follow suit.

I hope this explanation helps with  some of the horizontal scrolling that some users have.

Not sure that I agree with this as my setup will display the pictures no problem but the text still needs to be scrolled, in the one post in question.  Having said that the answer would seem to be that the PD site has a limitation of 800 pixels wide and to work within that. Will review situation and try to ensure that further postings are trouble free.

Ah hu! seems we have a plausible answer. Just the same it might be a good excuse to buy a new screen.
