Diagonal sidewheeler engine build

Hi,

a long time has passed and now i'm building the engine .-)

(but not only one :-) - 4 by number )

i think i will finish them within one month:
the pump is a little bit difficult to build

- but here some pictures

a friend of me and i will drive a 160cm boat with it - but:
we build the engine not only to drive a boat.
it should be an eye catcher too
i.e. we made the rods profiled - not only a flat rod

most used material is gun metal like cylinder, rods, crosshead
frames, slide bar and cylinder covers are mild steel
all bearings are bronce
valve is made of brass

the eccentric is build of gm (strap and head) and the connection is made of steel plate

PS: if anyone is interested in one machine let me know - but make a fair offer
and:
i have got an offer for a pair of wheels made of stainless steel - but its very expensive :-(
the parts laser cutted will cost 250,- euro for a pair :-(
i will spend the money to get it :-)
the rest is done in a few hours - included welded shields

I'm hard working on it but there are a lot of small parts to machine ...

Hi Frank, looking absolutely stunning. I am impressed with your engineering skills this is a testament to your work and commitment to the model. Is this going into a hull at all or will it be for display?

Hi Jim,

2 engines will be fitted into a paddlesteamer, one in my showcase and one will maybe sold

i've finished some small parts today - but forgotten to take a picture.
tomorrow i will update the progress :-)

Hi,

now i finished the machine as is - only a few options to be build like feed pump and some levers for drain coocks and so on ...

but the engine works fine :-)

where the aluminium wheel is mounted (to connect the 2 cranks) there will the eccenter for the feed pump find its place - but to test the engine i need a connection

Congratulations and well done, this is absolutly superb.

I would love to knwo some more details as to how you did it all, especially in such short time!

One day, I wish to make a slightly modified version of this engine to go into a model, not yet got the skills, deffinatly need practise on the lathe/mill first!

Have you done all the machning yourself? Did you make or buy the castings? If bought, where from?!

Sorry for so many questions, i'm just very impressed!

That's got to be built from a kit!!!!

Only joking, all you can say to that is WOW and bloody well done-I wouldn't know where to even start.

I'd love to see video of it working.

it would save a lot of hours

every cylinder take 6 hours of machining - 3.5 hours only the look-like-casting-milling.

here a picture during milling the "casting-face"
(tool: 5mm dia ball mill, 0.1mm offset, indexing on a rotary table)

i will cont' the thread when i machined the next parts - but first there are several other things to do
and i think i didn't build the boiler myself.
i don't have any experience in boilers / burners.
to spend some bucks on a boiler may save a lot of money in a sunken boat :-(

my world  is to make chips by milling / turning :-)

yes - every part (except one: the frame-sheets are laser-cutted) is self made on my hobby shop
