Hi from Stockholm
« on: June 29, 2009, 05:22:35 AM »
Hi everyone,
My interest in paddleboats comes from the fact that a friend at our club in Stockholm built a freelance model of a Missippi stern wheel steamer but had trouble driving the paddlewheeel in a scale like way. I thought that it should not be too difficult and have made a first attempt and in the process I learned that it is a bit more complicated than I thought.
After looking through the net I found this site and I am sure that if I can phrase the right questions about paddle boats all the answers are here.
I am a member of Stockholms skalabåtklubb a small club (about 75 members) mainly interested in scale model boats.
Our website is www.stockholmsskalabat.org.se for those who are interested.
Well thats some info about me.

Welcome to Paddleducks Anders.... A good sternwheel drive is indeed difficult to do in model sizes, however, if you do a search for "Pitman" it should give you a lot of information.

I tried to view your club website, but I just get a "Page not found" error, so either the website is offline, or the address is incorrect?

Welcome! I have been to Stockholm once for the steamers, my favourite was Blidosund. As a city Stockholm is nice, although we had our first meal in McDonalds because all the resturants were full! We learnt out lesson and booked after that!

Thanks to both of you for the answers to my post,
First to Hans, no unfortunately Victoria is not my boat. We are several Anders in the club and I have no photos on the web at present. I am glad you like the web and we have some very good model builders as our members. My recent boat models are Bluenose and a french fishing boat "Sloup Coquillier". None of them paddlewheelers.
My paddlewheel boat interest so far comes from making the electric driving unit for my friend's sternwheeler. For the time being the paddlewheels are driven by cranks at both ends. It is not the right way and I am looking at other possibilities. There are some previous discussions on the forum that I have looked at but there seem to be no clear conclusion about how to do it unless by steam engine.
About Stockholm's steamers. Yes, we do have some very nice old but still operational steam boats in Stockholm and Blidösund is one of them. Mariefred is another that has been on the same route between Stockholm and Mariefred in lake Mälaren for more than 100 years.

Thanks Mick,
Yes I looked at this thread and solution 6 looks promising to me but I have not read about anyone who has actually put one in a boat. It would give me more confidence.
I may give it a try. Interesting task is to cut a slot with a radius of 23 - 30 cm but it should not be impossible. Rigth now it runs with variation 1 and since the cranks are hidden to the unknowing eye it looks quite correct.
My friend is building a second sternwheeler so we may try the version 6 in the next boat.
