Fuel costs of Diesel worldwide
« on: April 10, 2008, 12:52:06 AM »
Why do you think you have to register to get a water tank! You're right, making a buck.

However, we are still a commonwealth so maybe mother england could supply us with some help.

It might not be too far out of the question.

Don't expect to get the help for nothing though - We have 17.5% VAT (purchase tax) on everything we buy, petrol/diesel is taxed at over 80% (currently over £5 - $13 US per gallon)..... Come to the glorious UK and get ripped off by the government!!

Why do you think so many brits are leaving the country?

I rest my case m'lud....

Hi Eddy you quote the price of petrol (gas) as over $13 US per gallon, In Canada our Gas (Gasoline) is now sold by the Liter currently $1.10 CAN, How is it marked at the Pumps?

Gerald

Gerald,

Cost of diesel (I have a diesel car) is currently 116.9p per litre - Our pumps are priced in litres, though I still stick to calculating cost per gallon, as that's my generation ;)

So 116.9 x 4.54 (to get cost per UK gallon) = £5.31 (approx)

Damned expensive!!! :(

Hi Eddy,
I just checked and Diesel is going for $113.9 to $118.8 per liter in Ontario. With the Pound going for $2.00 CAN it makes our fuel prices about half yours, but remember before you pack to immigrate what our distances between places are.

Gerald

Hello all, well I've gone and put some diesel into my 2.0L car tonight at a whopping £1.27.9/L only put in £20's worth which is enough for three retuurn trips to work. Will have to get an even more frugal diesel I think. At present I achieve a really good 46 mpg which does actually equate to 1 return trip  to the office.

cheers

Jim

AUD1.56 per litre

GBP is 0.47, so £0.73
EUR is 0.59, so €0.92
CAD is 0.95, so $1.48
USD is 0.97, so $1.45

Hello all, well it gets a lot worse rather quickly!! Went to the filling station yesterday to fill the car after leaving the three return trips form Wednesday night. The price has now shot thrpough to an astronomical £1.32.9 / Litre which equates to an unbelievable £ 6.04 / Imp Gallon. Absolutely ridiculous. If I were to fill my cars' tank from empty it would cost me £90 . Oh well it is only money, this'll definitely cut down the beer and modelling money now.

BTW thanks to Roderick for giving the worldwide comparrisons

From other ferry and transport groups, there have been many reports of operators converting to biodiesel or to recycled oils in diesel engines.  In Paddleducks, I have mentioned MV (former SWPV) Maranoa running on oil recycled from fast-food cooking.  Perhaps you could concoct your own from potato peelings (there are lots of websites devoted to making biodiesel).

Of course, on the Shetlands, cost may not be important if distances are not great.

Hello all, Roderick what a great picture you loaded there. It probably took as long as driving from the ferry to the lighthouse  ;D I was talking with the finance director of the ferry company who serves the North Isles from Mainland Scotland and he was telling me that their fleet of three 110M & 126M '97 built ferries are all to undergo some modifications to allow the propulsion fuel to be changed to a heavier type while leaving the MGO to run the Generators for the on-board services. Based on the manifold is a heater to allow the heavier fuel to be atomised to enhance its burn qualities the conversions will cost about £30,000 per ship but the cost v's benefit will see savings in a matter of months. The service speed is reduced by 1 1/2 knots but this will be hardly noticeable on the 12 hour journey as they can in reality do it in 9 1/2 hours when the need arises.
On your point of distance travelled while here on the islands it is a valid point. The object we have to come to terms with is how often do you really need to make the journey. The nearest Supermarket is 25 miles away as is the Pharmacy and many other essential service providers. Since we moved here my diary has never been more utilised and integrated with my wifes' diary. We sit down every two weeks and make sure there isn't going to be any un-necessary duplication of travel arrangements.

cheers

Hello all. This is my first post a pity its a miserable one. I work at a bio diesel plant it hasn't sold a litre and has shut down. Its sister plant which does produce has also bit the dust. The reason the raw materials actually cost more than the refined article in the uk, as unlike other countries it is not subsidised to make it a cheaper alternative where as France, Sweden and the U.S do help out. They moan about green house effect, carbon poisoning etc  but the're not prepared to lose out on taxes in the U.K.hence we pay through the nose in the form of vat. As for it destroying rain forests true, although jatrophe? is used more than palm oil and it is not edible anyway also  low grade tallow is an alternative and it works. Still here we don't stick together any more if we all boycotted one petrol station  for a day a week and bought elsewhere on that day they would soon knock 2p off or boycotted one producer in particular even better then the following week another.Pie in the sky dreaming though i suppose it never was or will be a perfect world . Sorry to be so morose its a good job our boats are ozone friendly or we'd have Benny Hill type park keepers trying to levy the steamers mid lake.
Regards to everyone promise my next post will be happier  K. alias Casper

Hello casper, welcome to the forum. It really is a shame that the bio-diesel is a non-starter in the UK. As you say the tax pound is the only thinhg the politicians (of any colour) are looking for to pay the exorbitant and profligate amonts of our money without any real regard to worth.  :offtopic Down off the soapbox now. As i said welcome and we look forward to assisting you with your paddle aspirations.

cheers

Jim

p.s. the price has gone up to £1.32.9 / L  here this week. It really isn't on!

Hi
Gasoline(Petrol) is $120.9/L, Diesel 131.9/L The part that really is going to heart is when the price of Diesel is passed on to the end users (us) from all the truckers. Diesel has increased in price over the last couple of years from about 30% the price of regular gas to its current above gas prices. As for Bio-Diesel until it is made from non food crops I think it will create major problems.

Gerald

Hi all.  I filled up my Diesel Skoda Octavia at the local Asda store serve yourself pumps today and the cost was £115.9 per litre (liter to some of you foreigners) ;D.  I did get a discount of 2p per litre as I paid with my Asda Mastercard, a worthwhile reason for having that card which is used for little else (yes I am Scottish and yes I don't like spending :'( so I did rejoice over the discount ) :great

At £115.9 per litre for diesel, perhaps you could run the vehicle on whisky/whiskey?
A good bottle shouldn't cost more than £30 for 750 mL.
