Hi PD's....did they not use anthracite during WW1 to minimise the smoke signal given out for viewers over the horizon?

courtesy of that Wikapedia type site.......Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92% and 98%.[1][2] The term is applied to those varieties of coal which do not give off tarry or other hydrocarbon vapours when heated below their point of ignition. Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame.

From memory ...... ...Welsh or Irish coal provided the greatest smoke screens when required......   ....Derek

I wonder what people made of the change from windows to port holes in the past... I'm sure the Captain Appreciated the wheel house . On my drawings (as built) he was afforded a 6inch raised wooden grate and no canvas dodgers..... made of different stuff in those days

Perhaps to add balance to my last comment perhaps the MCA should share responsibility for her appearance given that they are sometimes awkward to deal with.
Must try and get up their soon as i noticed that i recognise the 'Captain'  - i do believe i was involved in training him. I wonder if he thinks I'm good enough to 'have a shot'

Afraid I'm a fairly bogus boat modeller with just a couple of RTRs and an RTR conversion, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL5hDAsj3is. I have a Dave McMurnin hull for the Jeanie Deans, moulded by Lachie Stewart, but haven't started it yet. I'm mainly an aircraft man but keep coming back to boats.

However let me know if you do consider going up and I will see if Lachie is interested in coming as well with his Caledonia. Incidentally he has started the Maid of the Loch.

A number of the "before" photos show the vessel with the dreadful 1930s bow imposed on her by the new owners the first thing.  That's been altered to be better, but only at the cost of a deck cabin that destroys the vessel's period appearance. I don't see the cabin's worth. In inclement weather, it won't hold enough people to make a profitable complement of passengers; some will still be out in the cold, and resenting the fact that others got shelter. In fine weather, no one will want to be in it, which will reduce her practical capacity or overcrowd the open spaces. And I've been told there's a veritable hurricane inside when the door to the forward deck is open.

She's now owned by a preservation trust whose function, one supposes, is preservation of this unique survivor.  Wish they'd start on that.'

Visited Loch Katrine today and sailed on the Walter Scott. Business was good and the deck was heaving with tourists. Took lots of detail shots which I have uploaded to Photobucket just in case someone starts a model. I have included a couple of samples. Hope also to edit the video in the fairly near future but huge backlog of clips building up. As always if anyone wants any full bhoona 9 megapixel files message me with your email details and I'll forward.

Spoke to a charming young lady as I was disembarking and was ushered up to the bridge to snap happily there also.

The steam launch Talisker was alongside for a while and both engineers were in animated conversation.
