A couple of websites with photos of the Captain Sturt. The photos are copyrighted so I haven't posted any here. They span 1910 to 1950. There's one of it being rebuilt in 1916, at Mannum Quarry, as bare frames.

Displays two main horizontal engine cylinders on independent beds which is fine, but then a singular outboard horizontal cylinder in which we assume would be one of two - this snap also displays two?  huge coupling drum winches associated with the central main two cylinders which does not appear to be connected

Displays one or the [assumed two] outboard cylinders but suggests that this is one of the two Captain Sturt main cylinders

I had questioned this years ago  ....however there was no real interest in our Captain Stuart

PRG 1258/1/420 or http://images.slsa.sa.gov.au/godson/1/00500/PRG1258_1_470.htm clearly shows an engine of a sternwheeler. No question about this one.
PRG 1258/1/472 or http://images.slsa.sa.gov.au/godson/1/00500/PRG1258_1_472.htm doesn't. As you already said, we see some kind of steam driven winches, but definitely no sternwheel engines. So it's probabely just a mislabeled picture.

If so, they are no sternwheeler main engines. But it doesn't look like an engine factory to me anyway. Maybe it's simply the engine room of that dredging barge shown also in http://images.slsa.sa.gov.au/godson/2/00750/PRG1258_2_542.htm and obviously mistaken for Captain Sturt.

...no relation to me....she was built as a snagger..... ....not sausages on the BBQ....but snagging is the term used ....to remove the fallen gum trees from the river that would be termed as a snag  

Still a little unclear, as Derrick boat was not self propelled.... .......Derek

So considering PD's are a "not for profit" group....I suggest we fit into the latter clasification ...so are OK

Most public-library and archive collections have lots of miscaptioned photos: wrong subject description, or wrong date.
Most have not got the resources to fix the problem, even when alerted.
State Library of Victoria has fixed a couple of blatant marine ones.
Public Records Office of Victoria follows the archive maxim: 'We save what we were given, warts and all'.  The only fixes which we will make is when we mistyped an original.
It is starting a wiki-style section, in which anyone can place amendments, which will then be viewable by others without affecting the integrity of the original item and its cataloguing.

I have yet to be able much via that approach to post the updates.

These photos from SA are undoubtedly another set in that category, and it is up to groups like this to determine the truth while a generation which has some inkling of the knowledge is still alive.

We have a dredger barge in Toronto harbour that the insides look a lot like that. Ours isn't steam powered but a big dirty engine.

Re the SLSA website, most images are available to me but some are not (I live in South Australia, but I don't think it matters). It may be that you were unlucky enough to try and view only the "prohibited" ones.

I can view them from the UK Chuck, maybe they have some sort of block on Chinese IP addresses? I know LOTS of websites block Chinese, Taiwanese, and Russian IP's mainly because of the spammers and hackers that come from those locations.

I didn't get a 'blocked ' message: I got 'can't open site' message, and the same when I went to the truncated address.  That could be because it is Saturday morning, and the site is down for maintenance.

I'm away for a few days: skiing on the snow which will melt to form my summer boating.

Seems a bit spotty.  Some images I can open via a proxy server but its enough to get a good idea on how Capt Sturt looked in her prime.
