Getting round to finishing my Glasgow and I'm stuck for what to use to simulate the towing hawser. I've looked on all the usual sources, plenty of rigging cord, etc but nothing big enough to look like a proper hawser. Will be trying camping shop next unless anybody has a ideas.

Hemp string for tying packages for posting comes in various thicknesses and can usually be found in hardware stores, the post office, possibly by questioning Google or e.Bay. If you coat a length with PVA glue (woodworking glue) you can paste down any "fluff" and also roll the string to the finished shapes that you want it to end up as, while it is still wet. PVA dries clear, so if you want to paint the string to a different colour, you can easily do that afterwards

Haberdashery sections in big (or little) stores sell various sizes of "piping" often in cotton which can be easily coloured with cold tea.

Hi Greebo et al, I'm about to do a wee tutorial on how to make a braided cord for the purposes of making thicker hawsers. Watch this space as they say.
