The first paddle wheel ships, North River of Clermont in the  USA and Comet in Europe, were built before locomotives were  invented

Your "Rubbish" comment is only partially correct. The North River and Comet were not the first steamboats. There were a few steamboats in Europe before the Comet including Jouffroy & Fulton in France and a few before before the North River in America. Boats by Morey, Rumsey Fitch preceded Fulton's.

The Comet (1814?) and the North River (AUG 1807) were the first SUCCESSFUL commercial steamboats. That's where you erred! The first steam locomotive was circa 1814

Without wanting to become involved in the above argument/discussion, I feel I ought to point out that the earliest steam locomotive was built in 1804 by Richard Trevithick and Andrew Vivian.

Richard Trevithick's invention is considered the first tramway locomotive, however, it was a road locomotive, designed for a road and not for a railroad
