Could someone please explain to an Colonist what a "Fiddley" is??

The fiddley was a grating which let ait/light into the boiler and engine
rooms. Also let in the rain! Made of round bars of iron set in an angle iron
frame.were found in all the old steamers.Best regards Mike Mayhew.
