Replica Sirius?
« on: June 16, 2005, 06:14:50 PM »
Reed boats, a few wooden boats, and some of the greatest early vessel names - "Wild Cow" and a few similar. Ah, those Mesopotamians. I have a book on ship names that cites this, and will dig it up soon.

By the way, was the replica Sirus the one I've seen in a 1930s era film? I cant tell what, it was a chance sighting on television, but clearly showed a paddler at sea, riding like a duck in every respect. It was loaded with actors dressed in stovepipe hats, bonnets, etc., and I wondered if it was a veteran or replica.

I'd like to get the citation - if Sumerian, the name would have been
something like MA2.GUD.HUSH - or something like that...

Well, the replica I refer to has a photo on p. 10 of The First
Atlantic Liners. The caption reads "This 'replica' of an early steam
vessel gives a very good impression of the appearance of the Sirius",
and is credited to Allen Villiers. The ship was clearly intended to
be a replica of the Sirius, because of the distinctive figurehead.
That's all I know about this ship, and I would love to know if it is
still around somewhere. I don't think that this was the paddle
steamer at the end of Around the World in 80 Days, but I could be
mistaken (it's been a while since I've seen the film).
