Sidewheels and sternwheel on same craft

I just noted a book on steamboats on the colorado river and it
caused me to remember one little steamer ( the Undine?) a 30
foot open launch I belive that had both side wheels and a stern
wheel

quiry--- does ano one know of other craft with both side and
stern wheels? and / or paddlers with more than two side wheels
or other craft that hadve tried tamdom wheels ( be sides the CSS
ironclad Lousiana ( 1862) that was not quite finished at the battle
of new orlines and destroyed to prevent capture)

Wooohhh..I LOVE the idea of a boat like this...I mean...WHY NOT?

"Hero of the Month" Award for the first Paddleduck to come up with a
picture of a stern/sidewheeler combo. PLEASE see if any of you can
dig something up on this as it would not only make a great topic of
research, but also a tremendous modeling subject for someone!

The German paddle steamer FREYA has both side wheels, steam powered, and a
diesel powered screw. She operates out of Kiel, www.adler-schiffe.de, and
was previously DE NEDERLANDER at Rotterdam, before that an oil bunkering
barge, and originally the WESTERSCHELDE of 1905.
The diesel was fitted at the insistence of the Dutch safety authorities when
she was converted back to steam around 1990.

Good suggestion, Alistair... but we still need a side/sternwheeler
combo...wheels on the SIDE AND wheel on the blunt end. Auxilliary
screws a la beloved "Great Eastern" don't quite qualify!!! I'm not
even sure if one ever existed...maybe in deep darkest Africa??
(clutching at straws, here) ...and how 'bout a double SIDE wheeler??
With two wheels each side..one in front of the other? Could some
strange experimental craft have existed? I'm waitng for my book on
Fulton's "Clermont" to arrive because there looks to be an extra set
of wheels on each side just ahead of the main paddle wheel..but
probably is a gear wheel rather than a paddle. Two wheels each side
in tandem would surely be a pretty tricky thing to work out getting
the rotations correct so one wheel wouldn't work against the
other...nevertheless still an interesting "ponderable"!

Hi Paul
actually the paddle steamer comet a 45 footer designed by henry
bell 21.5 ton had two 4 arm paddles on both sides. evidently
conected, the wheels were offset one wheel had a single arm
at the vertical bottom position. while the other wheel had one
arm entering the water just as the other was leaving
a full sized replica was built they had a discritive booklet
about her
comet trust lithgows ltd, port glasgow renfrewshire gives full
details
will try to see if the comet is still around on google

as for the undine;
there are some photes that have been placed online by the
marriot library, University of utah I have found them there ( they
are also publishers of " steamboats on the colorado") can not
remember how I found it right now ( university of utah on google
and searching arournd that libary page.) there was also another
time found a link on a site called sidewheelers and
sternwheelers. it was a listing of pictures in most of the states of
the union only one site in utah and that was the photo files of the
marriot library. there were many links to photos in other states .

I have seen a cutting about 2 Nile steamers for Thomas Cook that were
converted from quarter-wheelers to side-wheelers.

Henry Bell's COMET as originally built wqas a double side-wheeler, althiough
the repliuca has only single wheels

According to some sources, the record for multiple propulsion -

S.S. Great Bertha - - Fitted with eight seperate paddle wheels, (four on each side of the thousand foot hull, 85' diameter) triple screw with an auxiliary sternwheel (folded up when not in use) and twenty-one masts, barkentine rig. Forty six boilers fed fifteen funnels. Landscapes depicting Gibbon's Fall of the Roman Empire were painted upon the paddle boxes, described by the Times as "awfully grand." The ship was launched by Miss Oligacene Titanothere, with the immortal words "May God protect her and all those who get in her way."

The timing of the side wheels was ensured by a novel device patented by Ephram Collins Hardknox, enabling multiple connected side lever engines in one motion - an earlier idea involved 106' flywheels with connecting rods, like a locomotive, but tests proved that far too much oscillation was produced, theoretically ruining jetties in New York and Liverpool simultaniously.

The Great Bertha's career was highly successful, despite the doubts of jealous competition and running at full speed into the shore in Egypt, filling in a ditch with water for several miles. The "Suez Incedent" was defused when Disraili picked up the check and later thanked the Colossal Mammoth Cast Iron Steam Ship Company for services rendered to the Crown.

The record for paddle wheels on a river craft belongs to the Mississippi river boat Grand Wahoo, whose immense wake of five combined paddles proved highly valuable when chartered by Eads, but that is another story.
