Old Yahoo group messages...
« on: June 15, 2005, 08:12:09 AM »
I've now copied over 730 of the messages from the old Yahoo group onto the new website. Because I'm dealing with two websites and cutting and pasting from one to the other it's a slooow process - I'm averaging about 70 mesages per hour - so you can work out for yourselves how long I've spent on the task so far! :-)

There are numerous problems with the task.

For one, it's difficult to try to maintain a thread so the messages are easy to read - Yahoo didn't do that side of things very well!  But I'm doing my best to keep all of the related messages in a seperate topic...

Secondly, I cannot keep the original message dates - As I post them on here they get the new date that they were posted on, so don't take any notice of the dates - Many of the messages will have been originally posted two, three, or even four years ago!

Thirdly, A LOT of the links (URL's) will probably be out of date now - So don't blame me if you click on a link and get nowhere!

Fourthly, many of the members have long since vanished from the paddler scene, and haven't been seen on the old Yahoo group or on here for a long time - So don't expect a reply from the original poster if you have a question!

Finally, you CANNOT post messages in the "Yahoo Forum". The messages are provided for reference only. If you wish to continue a particular topic, please do so in one of the normal message areas of this website, that will help us to keep things organised...

Remember, you can use the "Search" function at the top of the forum to find any information in any of the message areas.

I hope that covers everything? Any questions, just yell!

After about 5 days of copying messages I'm eventually over half way! I never realised it would take this long - If I had realised I might never of started!!

Anyway, it would be a crying shame to lose all the info from over 4 years at Yahoo, so it will be worth it in the end.

Messages about stuff for sale, automated messages about file uploads, messages that just say "thanks" etc etc are NOT being copied, after all there's no point in copying them as they don't have any real content that's worth keeping, so please don't come yelling and screaming saying there were over 4000 messages on Yahoo, so why have you only copied 2500 or so....

Now I think I'll take a break for a few days, and start again sometime next week.

Well, 10 days and almost two and a half thousand messages later - I've finished!!

So, now that the messages are sorted, I'm taking a break for a few days from website related tasks - Hopefully I can get some modelling in now! :-)
