Great Western plans

I checked out the Glasgow University website, very user friendly, and
found a record group for Barclay, Curle! So I emailed a request on their
form for plans for the railferry. Got back a form "response" that my
request was received and they would try to respond within 10 days. About
30 minutes later I recieved a real response from the Archivist! Alas.
No plans at Glasgow but the NMM at Greenwich has the bulk of the Barclay
plans. Checked out their website and got confused. Said that requests
cost $ or is it # but couldn't find the fee schedule so will try again.

I did find a good book on rail ferries with some very good photos of the
Lansdowne which was a sister to the GW and which appears to be a near
copy of the GW except for length. So if I find plans for her I will
probably shorten them and go from there.
I think the research is as enjoyable as the end product.
At age 65, my f-i-l used to say, "I learned something new today".
Have to go eat my Thanksgiving turkey.

Hi all,

Just to say that very good Great Western line plans of the hull (together
with the ship's history and some nice lithographs) can be found in the book:
"Brunel's ships" Chatham, 1999. Sells for 30 Pound Sterling at motor books.
No plans of superstructures and paddle wheels/boxes though in this book.

The line plans are printed over two pages and any photocopy will end up with
distortion due to the bindings. But I guess this is can be remedied easily
with paper, glue, pen and ink touch up work.

Is this the Ocean Steamer? I am looking for the rail car ferry Great
Western.

Yes, Randy..Christian was referring to Brunel's "Great Western" which
is rather different from the Detroit river "Great Western" car ferry
which you are researching. Let us know how you're getting on with
this research, as I have a couple more ideas which may help you if you
run into a jam.
