Wanted: Plan of PS "Columba", David Mc Brayne Ltd

I am searching for a copy of the plan of paddler "Columba" of 1879, David Mc Brayne Ltd. Unfortunately the plan is out of trade, even Taubman don`t have one. Perhaps one of our members will sell me a copy? Of course, all costs I will take over.

Columba is certainly a magnificent ship, Kenny kindly passed on a copy of the  'Clyde' drawings to me, many thanks Kenny!

There are some nice drawings of her sister ship Iona in the comet to Caledonia book, but Columba is, in my opinion far nicer!

As a kid i used to enjoy a Saturday sail with my Dad at the local pond... there was a fantastic model of Columba which raced around with a horn that chased almost every Duck from the pond.

She was sleek, fast and elegant.... but what truly made her stand out to me was the owner & his skills...

He used to tell me the clicking in the wheels were because the drive was given by Nema 34s ... as a kid that impressed me (mainly because i had no idea what he was talking about)

As a guy that now uses cnc that impresses me even more now! Steppers run on dc ... through a 27mhz radio this guy was good! ( I was just moving on from  a stick and a fixed rudder to a  Bob's board with single push button control ... that was mind blowing in itself )

We were in a very good club then where things were shared and for the grater good.. many good things came from the same club including Phil Thomas ..

I'm not sure you will squeeze a steam engine in this one ... but look forward to the build..

Hi Kim,

yes, from the first time on I saw a picture of "Columba" I was very attracted of the ship with her elegant lines. In Paris navigation museum there is a exact 
1 : 48 model of her. In last 20 years I several times tried to buy a plan, but it is out of trade since longer time at different traders in US and UK.
I would make a steam driven model. May be, for better stability it will be good to extend the breadht of hull by 15%.

Dear Kenny, once more many thanks for sending the plans. As Kim wrote, this is a really excellent forum where things are shared and comes to the right adress.
May be, I can send you another plan, perhaps of a continental paddler?

I do like your style!

The eye is easily deceived by extra beam but more depth is glaringly obvious sometimes!

If you can shoehorn a steam engine in then i will be very impressed!

I was impressed with the steam engine in Marchioness of Lorne .... you really are raising the bar with this one.

Go for it & i look forward to it!

An Epoxy hull is my first thoughts in how i'd go about things... look forward to how you tackle it.

There is a 48th scale builder's model of Columba in Glasgow also.

excellent model. The Glasgow Transport Museum - I would like to make a visit - but I fear, some models are not good visible since the new kind of exhibition?

Hi Thomas,

No, the ship models are not as well (or as many) laid out as in the old museum.

However, there are many more that you can see if you get a chance to visit the Resource Centre which is where they keep all the non-displayed modles and that is where the Columba model is.

  Hi Thomas.

  I have been looking through my stock of photo's and noticed some of PS Columba which I took a few years ago in the Glasgow Resource Centre. A few are posted here, If interested I will show some more.

  No photo's of the complete ship as it is a long one and very restricted room to take photos. Less than 2' foot behind to the next row of ships.
