Piston Valve Engine Explanation
« on: April 10, 2017, 01:17:51 AM »
Good morning. This is my first post here..

I have a small steam boat that is powered by a ropey oscillating engine. I wish to replace it with a small piston valve engine instead. Can anyone point me to a simple drawing or video that explains how they work and can be reversed? I have seen Bogstandard's plans, but was looking for a short explanation before embarking upon a build.

I have read a few things, but seem to be getting more confused. Some seem to have hollow valves, whereas others are solid, but I cannot see why.

Thank you.

James.

Hi James

I noticed you havent had a reply and didnt want you to go unanswered but i have since noticed you have asked the same question on another forum. Maybe you now have the answers you need.

You want to replace the oscillating engine with something. You chose a piston valve engine because it can be reversed. The slide valve engine can also be reversed but it needs levers to modify the valve timing.

I wondered if you have considered not reversing the motor but instead keep it running in the same direction but use a small gearbox for reverse.

Have you looked at the MB22 on this forum. Drawings in the download section. Lovely 2 cylinder slide valve engine that is relatively easy to build. 2 cylinder so is self starting and added gearbox for reverse. There are a few article covering builds here too. Well worth a look

regards

Steve

Welcome both James and Steve  :coffee

Could I suggest that the build of steam as a medium of power is diametrically opposed to the instant thoughts of power via electricity

James... you note that you have seen 'Bogstandard's plans'.....have you read the long & detailed build thread from the author?...........it would clarify and explain each & every question you would have in your build

Let us know about your progress......

Steve: Thank you. I have some more information now that is helping, thank you. I had not considered a gearbox, but it is a good idea. Thank you for the suggested download. I need to make some posts before I can access these.

Derek: I have not yet read Bogstandard's plans yet as I have only have access to a phone on which to read it at the moment. I shall be able to us a laptop soon and shall do so then. I looks excellent.

James.
