Another PS Adelaide build

G'day PDs just a couple of pic of my build of PS Adelaide started last weekend I cut the bulkheads out of hardwood ply not the best material to work with as it splinters Easley I then screwed them together then mounted them in the milling machine to cut the keel slot ,then screwed them to the building board .
After I finished mounting them I had a thought that if I put a base board on my band saw table & just cut a slot the width of the blade it might cut better with out splintering which it did, the band saw I have is not a wood cutting one but a slow speed metal cutting one but will have to do as I can't justify buying another saw

G'day Gary,

That's not real bad for a weekend's work! Just wondering, what type of glue are you using? And what timber will you use to plank it with?

Hope you are able to keep progress pics coming - nice to see how a 'proper' build progresses (as opposed to my Mary Ann build).

I have used Gorilla glue, and reckon it's fantastic - certainly a very strong glue.

G'day Jeff the timber I am using some close grain Oregon that I have had lying around for ever waiting for a project, I tried Jelutong a very fine grain timber from Malaysia it machines well used a lot for pattern making for foundry work but does not bend around tight bends well with out cracking .
I had to make a small table saw with a 2 mm carbide blade to rip it up a the large table saw that I have is not suitable
for small work I have cut all the planking material that I will need to plank the hull
I am using a home steam cleaner to steam the Oregon because of the close grain it bends & twists great
As far as glues go I have tried several polly,epoxy,J &B epoxy,araldite epoxy & Titebond 3 after doing several test glues
have decided on Titebond 3 , the glue i would like to have used was an epoxy from America that I used to use about 35 years ago when I was into model power boats called  K&B Hobby Poxy but doesn't seem to be around any more at least here in Australia I used to thin it down & completely coat the inside of the model which soaked into the timber & completely sealed the model against Nitro Methane fuels oil & water

G'day Gary, Thanks for that info. I will be using thin strips of Oregon for my decking when I get to that stage. Local timber merchant had to trim some 1 inch planks a while ago, and had several dozen very long strips about 3 mm thick. I will still need to rip them to about 6mm wide, but I think my table saw should do it - has a fairly fine blade. Just love the smell of Oregon and Cedar, and they are great timbers to work with.

Not being at all familiar with plans for boats, especially the Adelaide, I was wondering what your motor/drive set up will be? I may well have to revise my own plans after I see how my two tiny - but powerful - worm drive motors go in powering my own build. Going to be a couple of weeks yet before I get her on the water for a test drive though.

G'day Jeff I will be fitting a live steam plant I have a couple of engines that might be suitable for the job if not I will build
one also the boiler I am waiting until the hull is of the building board
Ok on the Oregon strips its hard to get good wood these  days, at the moment I am planking the hull no pic at the moment a slow process

G'day All just one photo of the slow planking process , in between gluing planks I am making a small drum sander to save hand sanding the planks as there small saw marks on the planks which require a lot of elbow grease to remove it will also bring them all to size

G'day all a couple of pic of the slow progress on the planking can only do 1 to 1 1/2 planks a day , I have just done my first test with my home brew [plank thickness sander which after a few little teething problems is finally working I wish I had made it before I had started with the planking the finish with the home made table saw is not up to scratch it leaves saw marks on the timber now the planks will all be uniform thickness & a smooth finish the hull is going to take quite some sanding to get the finish I want ,I don't want to sand it to much as the original planking on the  Adelaide PS is quite rough.
The sander is made from bits scrounged from the junk box with the exception of the toothed drive for the sanding drum the motor is out of a redundant Kenwood Chef mix master the feed roller is out of an old commercial photo copy machine

Forgot to add the sander still has the dust extractor pipe to be  fitted & covers on the sides to cover up the belts & chain

Hi Gary, Yeah, progress can be slow sometimes. But going by the photo's, slow and steady is producing great results. And that sander is a beauty!
Not done a thing on Mary Ann for a week - but will get back into it tomorrow evening I hope. Kepp upthe great work!

Morning Gary......is this a new or second hull?.....if so is the scale increased?...& finally what did you choose with respect to the draft?......

Happy new year to all, progress on the hull planking finished & removed from building board there a couple of gaps in the planking due to the clamps coming loose during gluing ,at the moment filling the gaps with epoxy  from the inside
While the hull was still on the building board I clamped it to the mill table & drilled the rudder pivot pin hole to keep it square ,next job is to cut & fix the deck beams
