PS Jeanie Deans

There is a nice B & W picture of 'Jeanie Deans" from Hugh Spicer at

This is a photo of her apparently in "LNER colors" (London & North
Eastern Railway). Since it's a black and white picture it doesn't
show the colours BUT this is definitely NOT the black hull I have seen
of her in other pictures.

Can somebody please identify what the LNER colors would have been for
"Jeanie" (hull, boottop, funnels etc)

Funnel: Red with white band and back top.
Hull black, with gold lining, but grey from 1935 to 1939.
The funnels altered, lengthened in 1932, from then until 1939 the forward
funnel was higher.
1946 to 1948 saloons scumbled wood effect, and dining room windows black or
dark brown.

What then do you think could be the reason for the apparently light
colored hull in the picture? This also raises an interesting
topic...I heard a number of Excursion sidewheelers were used as
minesweepers during the Second World War..would they have been
repained in some Naval color during this period?

Ooops, apologies, Alistair..I just re-read your post and discovered
WHY "Jeanie" appears with the light colored hull!

I'll bet she looked very sharp with the grey hull from '35-'39..wonder
if there's a colour picture of her in that livery anywhere? I'm going
to ask Jessie Drescher if she has one.

I haven't seen the photo you are referring to, but during WWII she would
have been in all-over grey or camouflage colours. if the hull is light I
imagine the photo would be from the 1935-39 period.
