Harry!
What a coincidence you should mention "Sultana". I have just
received a package from Nick Starace who is the President of the The
Ship Model Society of Northern New Jersey
http://njshipmodelsociety.org/He has written a paper for the Nautical Research Guild on the sinking
of "Sultana" and it is a fascinating and well researched piece of
work which clearly suggests there was a scandalous "cover up" of the
tragedy. Surprisingly there is no monument today to remember the
1600 soldiers and crew who died.
However, Nick is creating his own special "tribute" which is a 1/48
model of "Sultana". If you are familiar with his work on the
Sternwheeler "Dorine", you will appreciate that this will be a superb
and Award winning model. I think it's kind of tasteful that he's not
making this into a R/C Model but rather a static display.
He has also published a paper for the NRG on the building of the hull
of "Sultana" , one of the special Paddlwheelers which deserves an
important place in Maritime history and one which should be featured
in our files.
I appreciate you bringing her name up, Harry...and please feel free
to upload any information into a Paddleducks folder.
