Paddle Tug tow hooks, anyone have photo links?
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:23:10 PM »
Looking fir some good rear shots of the hook set ups on some turn of the century tugs  for me to copy. In my area tug boat competitions are long time established and if this boat I am re-building will perform with enough guts -I hope to enter and see what I can do with a paddle tug- which would be a rarity..

I am new to paddlers but the competition is fun to watch

If you know of some good shots of models or real old side-wheel tugs with tow hooks- I sure would appreciate your links or posts of them.

Thanks

Hi Greg,

A couple of photos of the towhook on the paddle tug Reliant, built in 1907.

Regards
Eddy

Try  finding a copy of BRITISH STEAM TUGS BY  P N THOMAS. I am pretty certain that there are some good drawings in there. Remember that model paddle tugs do not make good towing subjects other than a straight pull or push. Any sideways pull tends to lift one of the wheels out of the water losing traction and risking turning the model over!. regards, walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

If you use a gob rope ,which pulls the towrope down to the aft end of the tug it greatly reduces the sideways pull, in our club we have a graupner Glasgow which tows our 16ft towboat.
a picture attached of a stop /gob rope  at work and a couple of the Glasgow and our towboat, 8) 8)
