Oh no !! another waverley build
« on: November 19, 2011, 09:57:04 AM »
Hi folks here is yet another waverley build blog, with thanks to kenny for his help so far.
the hull being used is one from models by design which I had to wait awhile for, so I started to make the deck houses from the plans that i had. I have made them from 1/32nd birch ply to keep the top weight to a minimum.
I also started on the seats.

while waiting for the hull I decided to use the Graupner paddle wheels and a chain drive from motionco,so to see how effective they were I made a jig uo to test them in the small indoor test tank ( kitchen sink )

Well the hull has finally arrived and I must admit to being a little dissapointed with it.
It seems to be very thin, and has been very roughly trimmed around the stern to the effect that the stern section is nearly 3/8ths of an inch too low and will have to be built up ,also the sponsons are moulded in which could save a lot of work , But they are mis shaped on the tops so that the outer dia is smaller than the hull end dia.which means they will have to be re worked.

Hi Geo,

Looking forward to this one. I like the way you have started .. get the seats out the way then the next repetative job, windows, out the way and the rest should be good fun.
I'm surprised you didn't start with a Padle tug .... :)
Keep us posted.

Kim

Tokeep top weight down I have fitted 3/8th by 1/4 stringers around the top of the hull with 3/8 by 3/8 cross beams and a 1/8th ply sub deck on top of which will be  1/32nd ply planked deck, once these were fitted the hull now feels very rigid.
to get the graupner wheels to fit and also look correct it was necessary to remove the outer rims.

Thanks Kim    this one is completely different and out of my comfort zone as it is only 1/53rd scale and I have hands like Malt shovels.
I am going to simplify the windows and ports on this one as the hull is so thin cutting out all of the windows will severley weaken it, this is a picture of my window experiment 20mm tape sqares with a thin wooden frame seems to look O K. also and this will upset the purists she is going to have a bow thruster.if I can find a wide enough bit to put it in,
the tape and false windows just peeled off this time, we will see how it works later.

Now the waggly bit at the back, I have decided to fit a balanced rudder si I had to modify the stern a little and build a platform inside to take the rudder post and servo. ;)

After running some trials in a friends swimming pool  I have decided to change the drive system to a toothed belt drive I have also made a change to the gearing having the motor 1300 rpm with 18 to 1 and the belt drive 2 to 1 from the motor and it gives a more realistic paddle shaft speed, time will tell.

So progress so far the windows and ports are fitted and she has some paint on her, more to follow when I get more done probably after Christmas now, all the best to all   George.
