false keel

hi there
im overhauling a mississipi steamer from mantua i recently took over from someone on the internet
i have read about the danger of tipping over aswell for the models as for the real boats
this could be helped with a false keel
could anyone of you guys inform me about the do's and dont's with this matter ?
because belly up is no sight for any boat i think
