Can you suggest a suitable boat, please?
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:31:32 AM »
Hi all,
I'm currently building a slightly smaller version of E.T.Westbury's diagonal paddle engines.
My lathe is very small, my access to resources and materials is limited - for lack of a more polite term - so my engine is really a freelance beast vaguely to same layout as the Westbury engine.  Being somewhat b****y-minded, it will be (nearly) all aluminium, for which I've been making my own patterns and aluminium castings.

The overall width of one-half is about 3 1/2 inches (90mm), so the pair should fit into about a 200mm hull-width.

As for power, darned if I know: the bore is 11mm x stroke 30mm (for hopefully fairly-slow running.)

My transport to the pond (6km away) is limited to my motorbike, so the LOA should not be much more than 90 to 100 cm.

Can any of you suggest a suitable model/plan, please?

Cheers,
Geoff

Try building one of the Murray River boats... The dimensions/proportions are about right... The Tarella is 100'x20'.  I used to have copies of the builders plans for her (until someone stole them while building a model for me).

At the length and beam your after, your choices are going to be limited.... One of the Aussie boats as has already been suggested, or maybe a paddle tug.

Thank you, both, for your replies.

Could you be a bit more specific, Eddy, does any particular tug come to mind?

I do rather like tugs, my present one being the Frederik Mistral, electric, screw-powered, for which I hope eventually to build a steam-plant.

But I also have very happy memories of holiday-trips on paddle-steamers from Swanage, Weymouth etc, spending as much time as I could just watching the engines.  So I would like to pay my little tribute to those wonderful old-girls and their engineers.

I'm currently building a tug called Lingdale - Which is approximately 42" long with a beam of 7.5". God knows when I'll get it finished with the problems I have at home right now, it's not exactly top of my list of priorities...

Clyde Model Boats do a fibreglass hull for it, as well as fully functional brass paddlewheels, and numerous other bits.... Or you could build your own hull and wheels, the decision is yours - It just depends how much work you want to do yourself!

There were thousands of these tugs around from the middle of the 19th century into early 20th, so there are plenty to choose from, just a question of finding suitable drawings.

I've attached an image of a shipbuilders model of the Lingdale to give you an idea of what it looks like...

Eddy, that looks like my kind of tug - not too much detail, while still being interesting.

Are there any drawings for anything similar to her?

And how should I contribute to the site in order to be able to download plans?

Geoff

Hi PD's...& welcome Geoff  :gathering .......this example tug would be a middlish construction level....but would be a great build

You wisely ask about viewing plans........as with all WEB sites... :crash we have seen a number of potential builds grind to a halt through lack of initial understanding of the complexities in building a model be it a boat....or aeroplane ....or what ever

Be rest assured....... if you do commence a build here on PD's....you only have to ask a question & a member from our world wide group will answer with helpful & constructive comment.....:porkies ...no...no...no...we will help  :a102

Look at the left of the home page & you will see Donations/Subscriptions ........follow the links....you will not regret being a supporter of PD's........ Derek :beer

I started drawing-up the Frederik Mistral in AD2000, then havered and prevaricated until 2008, when I began cutting wood.  By 'drawing up' I mean that I was scaling up from a very small .jpg image of her lines to something sort of workable.  She is plank-on-frame, covered in pantyhose-reinforced-resin - I just couldn't get the concept of glass-fibre across to the local Chinese.

As with my engine, I don't expect any build to go exactly to plan - there are always aspects to keep the brain slightly fizzing.  That's what makes the end result personal.

And so,  Are there any published plans for the "Lingdale"?

Hi Geoff,

There is a set of profile and deck arrangement drawings (No Hull lines) in the book -
