USS Benton
« on: February 15, 2011, 01:24:14 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm trying to find photos of the civil war ironclad USS Benton, but apart from one or two very small images on the net I'm finding it very difficult to get much..... Can anyone help?

Regards
Eddy

unfortunately no but it looks interesting should anyone come up with something, is that a single paddlewheel at the stern, completely enclosed?

It has twin paddlewheels Mick - The rear of the boat has twin hulls with the paddlewheels mounted in between them. A strange design, which is why it interests me! :D

Not the Benton, but a couple of plans for civil war boat plans on EBay.

Eddie, I'm still trying to find info. i haven't even found the source where I got the other info. Have you looked at this site?
http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-b/benton.htm

info on Benton about halfway down page
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/county/stlouis/1ironclads.htm

here's the sister boat Cairo. i was in Vicksburg shortly after they found her on the river bottom and was salvaging her. Vicksburg is 800 miles from me. I have some models in a museum there.

I found another photos in an old mag. The Library where the photo originated from is the murphy Library in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. They have thousands of historical photos that they will copy for people. Just email them and ask if they have photographs of the USS benton  and they'll get back with you with what they have and the cost.

I wonderd why this class had twin hulls with the center wheel. They're are coverted snagboats. i knoew they seized and converted just about every boat afloat.

I'm five hours behind you so the sun is still shinning here. It's 4:22 so the evening is young. I'm trying to find stuff. I just had to give you the itch even worse to want to build it ha ha.

No worries there Joe, at the moment I don't have a paddler for our Paddler Day, so I have to get something built! And the USS Benton appeals to me as something different from the norm....
