Waverley build 2010
« on: August 01, 2010, 08:04:31 AM »
Hi fellow paddleduckers this is my build blog for the model of Waverley that I'am building. (Actually started building it in 2008 when I joined this site!!) Been meaning to do this for a long time! I have so for managed to buid the hull (not completely finished) which was scratch built using plank on frame method. Was told a scratch built Waverley should only be done by an experienced builder I'am not!! This is only my second build and first from scratch.  I plan to up load some pictures soon of the progress I have made so far. thanks for reading and look forward to your comments and constructive criticism!!

Hi Pd's, thanks for your kind words Derek, sorry for not getting back to this earlier. Although I have been working on the model for a while I have still a long way to go, so far build the hull (not finished) the front observation lounge (made about six actually keep getting ideas to improve it!!), the bridge, funnels and rear deck shelter (again not completed). Still can't attach pics think my pics are to large so will have to try and down size them. I calculated the plans I had bought were actually too short so had to stretch my hull a few inches to get it the right length the hull is plank on frame construction using 1/4 ply for the frames and 0.8 and 0.4 inch balsa and ply for the planks. Well have to go now it's after midnight and need to get some sleep!!

Hi thanks Mick glad you like her, she's being built to a 1 4/8 scale making her 60" long (according to my calculations) my plans length was 54" and looked wrong. The hull I hope is slightly deeper which is good to help with displacement and weight. I plan to make her fully detailed inside and out which will be a challenge but if I pull it off she should look really good. Will have to be carefull of weight so again the extra depth will help. The only thing is she wont be steam powered or at least not to start with, due to expense as it would have to be a triple expansion diagonal compound engine for accuracy!! I will now try downsize some of the pics of the hulls construction.

More progress at last!! The hull is almost smoothed down now, and the rear deck shelter and pursers office is almost finished. Just to put the two together as built the pursers office separate. My sponsons are built into part of my deck which will be removable. My deck is in three parts the first is the front from the bow to just behind the front observation lounge/start of the sponsons, the second is from the start of the sponsons to the end of the sponsons and the last goes to the stearn. My sponsons were made similar to Mercury's except my paddle drums are not fully formed just the top part above the deck height. At the ends of where the drums would be I will put uprights to make the front and rear sponsons in to compartments. Hoping to post more pictures soon

Looking forward to seeing some more pictures especially of your deck / sponson arrangement. Always interesting to see different people make the same boat in totally different ways.

Hi Mercury this post is especially for you I have included some pics of my sponson set up. You'll probably will notice the tinfoil, this is for an experiment I am doing. When I made my hull I forgot to make it slightly higher than deck level for the scuttle's down the deck edges. To compensate this I tried to use thin wood to create the extra height but it was to thin to stick on and the wood which did stick was to wide. So I have decided to see if tinfoil will work by covering the hull with it and have it make the higher edge I need. I'm not sure if it will work yet but it's worth a try, so far the paint has worked OK. My fans on the paddle wheel cover are not great but I will rectify this later. Earlier to day I cut out a slight length about 3mm deep from the hull side where the sponson will go so the section will sit in flush with the rest of the hull height acting as the center sub-deck. I hope my pics won't take to much space up I have reduced them by 75% so they will fit.

Hmm just been reading an old post on plating, and have decided against making the hull look plated. It's just to complected and I don't know enough about the subject. If anyone had a plan showing how the plating should be I'd maybe change my mind  ;D if anyone could help would appreciate it very much!! I have some up to date pics showing the sponsons in their right place. The bottoms of the funnels will be remade the ones in the pics are temps, if any one see's any other bits that might not be right I will welcome your input thanks. The masking tape at the front is to help work out where the portholes should go.

Just one thing James, since you asked.... It may just be the images that are distorting the view, but it appears that your funnels are too steeply raked?

Compare them to this side on view of Waverley when she was undergoing repairs...

Hi Eddy thanks for your input, having to check the funnels on my model as didn't think they were so raked!! Hope it's a distortion in the pics, not too worried as I say the base's are going to be remade. This time again using 1/8ply for the tops but the sides will be made with .8 mm ply stuck to the side of the base. To get the funnels in right I am going to measure the angle on my plans/pics, and then drill the hole on the tops of the bases to the right angle so the funnels should slide in at the correct rake. Well thats the plan!! My current funnels are round but might make eliptical shaped ones too. Looking at your pic Eddy not sure if my funnels are slightly to high and close together. Think the hight makes them look closer than if they were shorter any input on this would be appreciated along with any other parts. It's constuctive critisism that helps get these right.

Some pictures showing the funnel bases...
first one is taken from the port side, just behind the forward deck house (you can see the edge of it on the left of the picture) looking at the front of the forward funnel base (at the time, the crew ladder had been altered and covered by a 'cage', which can also be seen) it shows how the base itself is not very much bigger than the funnel... next two show the back of the same then front of the aft funnel base which are more square (but still have rounded corners) and 'stick out' enough for the hatches fitted into the tops of them. finally a side view shows how there's quite a big space between the two...
I hope they are of some help  ;D

edit; by the way, I didn't take the last photo (don't remember who did!), found it on line, it's older and shows the crew ladder in it's original position
