The Model Dockyard Handy-Book
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:11:29 AM »
Hi All
I am trying to investigate the origins of my model of SS Ceylon the full scale one was built in 1858.
I have found out it is not a true replica and have only three bits of information to go on.
1) It was bought during the 1930's
2) It has an engine that looks very much like the one produced in the Model Dockyard Handy-Book catalogue dated 1873.(albeit shown for a sidepaddle wheeler not single screw for my model)
3) It is 5ft, wooden hulled and masted, with a tin plated deck and deck cabins.
Are there any Model Dockyard experts out there(that is anyone that knows more than me which is nowt) that can point me in the right direction or any other handy-books that can be referred too?

Can you post a photo? Also have a look in the model to see if there is evidence of a very small label (about 1 X 0.5cm) This MAY have been an early Basset Lowke model.

Hi Stuart and All

No sign of a label, if only but I can supply the photo if I figure out how to post it

Ok I'm not great at uploading pic's either but hope it helps.
I've found a book of Stevens's Model Dockyard on the British Library website so it looks like a visit is in order.

Hi All
The British Library had 2 copies 1914/5 and a reprint of 1919.
Neither had the engine so it looks like the boat is pre 1914.
The hulls were very similar and of the right size but nowhere was their a description of the decking. so I don't know when the tin plate as exists on my model was produced.
Looks like I need to research a few more catalogues of an earlier period!
Any ideas where to look??
