Radio control new set required!

Hi PDs

My old Futaba 35mhz radio set is now very old and, frankly well past its sell by date. I am going to need a new outfit for the Connaught but I certainly don't want an all singing all dancing computerised outfit that costs a fortune. Has any one any suggestions for a 4/5 channel outfit with speed controllers available that's reliable and inexpensive? All information gratefully received! I realise this is a public forum but if there's any I should avoid - please tell me and give a reason (but only if you have a PERSONAL less than satisfactory experience!) Is 40mhz the way to go?

Hi Stuart,

2.4Ghz is the way to go nowadays, no crystals to change, and no chance of frequency clashes with other users.

A couple of my clubmates have the Planet 5 setup, 5 channel for an extremely good price, and it works flawlessly. It doesn't have the computer functions that a lot of the 2.4Ghz sets have, but as a basic unit it can't be faulted....

I have the 2.4 6 channel digital set as I also fly model aircraft. Price includes 1 receiver but additional receivers are very cheap. The 4 channel non digital set is also reputedly a good buy but I have no personal experience of the set. At £25.48 including a receiver the 4 channel set looks to be a bargain.

Have used the six channel set in several of my aircraft and in a converted Seaport Workboat using a Viper ESC. No problems at all.

I have spent about 2 hours trawling the web looking at radios. They don't make it easy do they?

What happened to the days of buying an 'outfit'? I guess I am going to have to phone the UK and see if someone can strap a set together for me!

Hi Stuart. I hate radio gear but I have bitten the bullet and  got the Planet 5 2.4 gigglebits set and I am very pleased with it. IT IS SIMPLE (like me) and is a doddle to set up. I got mine rfrom Galaxy Models, A transmitter and TWO recievers for £49.80 . I think you can get them a bit cheaper elsewhere. I believe Marine Modelling did a review of the gear in a very recent magazine if someone can put an issue date to it. Remenber the Gods didnt invent radio- they used carrier pigeons! Now, I can handle and feed pigeons but I tend to kill radios stone dead!!. Regards, walter.

I have ordered my radio. I didn't go for the Planet, I decided on Futaba. This was because the guy at Galaxy pointed out to me that all my servos, receiver nicad and charger would be compatable with it. So thanks for all the advice - it's on its way!

Certainly 2.4Ghz is the way to go and more and more reasonably priced equipment is comung on to the market. May I make a plea?
Please do not use 35Mgh for surface models in the uk. It is reserved for model aircraft. Thanks

Yes I was aware of 35mhz being an RC Aircraft frequency. Most model shops advise you and ask what you want the radio for. My set is 2.4Ghz - AND I'm in Greece! One of the main problems these days is cheap RC 'toys' which may be on any frequency, have a wide bandwidth and NO PENNANT - great huh?
