Rouken Glen Show 28th November
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:47:45 AM »
Hi Guy's

The Model Steamer Club of Glasgow will be hosting a 'Steamer Day' during there regular sailing day on Saturday 28th November starts between 1.30 and 2pm.  The aim of the event is to gather together as many steamers as possible.  We will be putting out model piers of Tighnabruaich, Blairmore, Arrochar and Millport.  I would like to extend an open invitation to anyone who feels this event will be of interest to them. Rouken Glen Park pond entrance is on Davieland Road Glasgow.  We have by the pond, an excellent cafe called Boaters, manned toilets, and good on street parking, but it can get busy if the weather's fine.

Best regards
Ian McGhie

Batteries charged, boats checked over, camera packed, sun out - set to be a great days sailing...
What could possibly go wrong :)

Lovely weather, but the event was curtailed by weed in the pond. Only three paddlers, unless anybody arrived after I had gone: LORD OF THGE ISLES (II), an unfinished but sailable MINERVA, and BOURNEMOUTH QUEEN. Screw steamers there were SAINT COLUMBA, KING GEORGE V, ATALANTA and QUEEN MARY II in original condition as QUEEN MARY, also a steam drifter and steam launch and a pilot boat and one of the MAIDs

Hi Guy's

Well we had, considering the problems with the pond, an excellent social gathering with some sailing in restricted waters.  I would like to say a big 'Thank You' to everyone who turned up.  We did have a weed problem which came as a complete surprise to the club committee when we arrived today.   The story I got told was that the pond was on the verge of overflowing during the week with all the heavy rain.   The council in their wisdom decided to open the sluice gate, which is fine.  The only problem we can see is that it wasn't managed properly thereafter  and the water level was allowed to drop way below it's normal level and exposing weed.  We were left with a blanket of weed and only a 3-4ft wide channel up the left hand side of the pond.  We put out four piers and those that were there did brave the pond to discover our new found North Passage. I would particularly like to thank Kim (Talisman) and family who attended for their great generosity in providing those their with a snack voucher to be used at the cafe.  It turns out that today would have been Kim's father's birthday.  Lee McLean, an expert model maker/engineer, was one of the original founding members of the Model Steamer Club way back in 1969.  The club will be contacting the council to rectify the pond situation ASAP. The only thing I managed to forget was my camera.  So if there is anyone out there who took photos please post them on the sight.  We also got to see Kim's excellent paddle wheels for the first time and very impressive they are.  Well worth considering for your next paddler!.  The club hope to put on a similar event in the future I will keep you posted.
Regards
Ian

Hi All,

and a great day was had by all....

Ian, committee & members ... what bad luck the combination of heavy rainfall and the opening of the sluice gate .....

Despite that ... what an enjoyable day with a great turnout of members and boats.

I really must try and get back more often ... even if it is to improve my sculling skills :)

Sorry i wasn't in charge of the camera otherwise there would have been more model shots .... but captures the enjoyment of all at the pond today.
Best regards to all and thanks for your kind words.
Kim & Family.

Commiserations on the hiccup to your arrangements but as always Murphy's Law prevails. Impressed by the selection of models on display, at least those I saw before Lachie dragged me away. You need to start these events at the crack of dawn for ex long distance runners.

Some pics I did manage to take before being hauled off to Lomond Shores. I haven't yet sussed out how to insert rescalable thumbnails so apologies if images are large.

I have much higher resolution images of these and other images taken at Rouken Glen and would be glad to mail to anyone interested. PM me with details of any images you require.

It's good to see that someone remembered to take a camera! ;)

What a shame about the weed, but it seems to be something that more and more club waters are suffering from - Maybe the warmer wetter weather we have been experiencing for the last 2 or 3 years?

Some very nice models on show, especially Lord of the Isles....

Regards
Eddy
