Hi Derek,

yes - the reversing gear is the same like on locos

today i finished the feed pumps

next i will weld the wheels - i got a pair: laser cutted parts in stainless steel.
next is to learn TIG-welding them :-) .-(

Hi

yesterday i bended some pipes for the pumps - but i don't have enough material.
So i've to wait until the order arrived.

but waiting sounds like "do nothing" - OHHH NONO :-)

i assembled and finished the first wheel
(i've ordered only one pair of wheels because its
not cheap: stainless steel in 1,5mm laser cutted)

welding 16 paddles is not very hard, BUT:
clean them a job for idiots :-)
- hot fingers during grinding the face side of paddles
- mill the great "spikes" without a measurement (milling by view)
- ...

The screws are only "test-fit" because i'm awaiting some material like hex-steel in stainless

I loved the Engine and the Wheels will look great to.

Hi,

today a small update

at the end of a build everytime the same happens:

a lot of work and less to see :-(
96 screws turned in stainless steel, mounted and assembled the wheel - next stage finished

and the feed pump in place.
Tested with a motor and got 8bar pressure - thats fine for me

also the slide valves mounted and adjusted - now the engine would like to work: when turning the crank shaft the cylinder begins to breath
(a quietly *ploooop* *zosch* on every stroke :-) )



tomorrow a the steam pipes planned - and maybe a first run

I just love your work Frank, it really is superb!

Now you need to find a boat that you can fit it in without hiding it away under superstucture! It would be a sin to hide all that lovely machinery!

Hi PD's....... :kewlpics Frank....& the speed of construction amazing....just a few questions or comments

I think you have substituted hex head S/S bolts over the temporary Phillips head screws :hammer
I cannot see any provision for lubrication on the cross heads or big ends
Are the cross head pads brass/bronze?
What is the total build weight?......1800 gms

To second the question & comment from Eddy   ???...have you a hull planned for the engine or is she to be a display model engine only?...... :coffee....Derek

I couldn't help but notice that the feathering control gear is inside with the shaft running through it, are those the wheels designed for the 'director class' tug?

A magnificent job Frank! The bit that really surprised me was the feedpump..... It looks like a tiny dribble of water that would never feed a boiler, and then you see the pressure that it manages to generate - Amazing!

Now that the intitial wow has worn off, and I have recovered my thoughts, I will say a little more!

What surprised me most, was the speed of construction. Such dedication to make something happen, as beautifully done as that is a genuine shock to me! I have more questions that I feel its reasonable to ask!

I very much intent to learn the nessecary skills, milling, lathing and casting to build engines, it is possibly the part of the model that interests me most, and in my mind after reading all I have it is doable, as you have proved. But how to make the leap from sitting thinking about it to actually having a completed engine in front of me is a little confusing! What would you suggest the best way to get started is? I havent done any lathe or milling work since school, and I left there in 1994....Help!

Thank you so much for shareing this build, it has reignited the desire to build my own, maybe with upcoming redundancy there will be time to actually do it as well?!

Have you decided what type of boat to put it in? Very much looking forward to seeing it properly in action :-)

Hi, nice to see your engine here too, in more detail. I'd love to have one of these as I'm planning to build a paddle-wheel ship too.
Please tell me where did you buy the paddle-wheels from and how much were they?
