Waverly by night
« on: June 20, 2009, 05:11:27 AM »
Inspired by Channel's cracking photographs of the Waverley and the Balmoral I submit my video of Waverley arriving and departing Custom House Quay, Greenock, last year. I had joined my good friends Lachie Stewart, famed long distance runner and raconteur, and Dumbarton and District Aeromodelling Club chairman Gerry Marchbanks at Murdieston dam to join in with the GMYPBC. Knowing that Waverley was due we dropped down to Greenock to await her arrival before heading home. She is a beautiful ship at the best of times but to see her arrive and depart on a summer night illuminated like a Christmas tree was magical. The only thing missing was a band on deck to provide background music. The quality of the video isn't great but hopefully conveys something of the atmosphere.

It's quite strange about one minute into the video, Waverley is going astern past the camera, and the bow seems to go on forever..... For a minute I thought someone had taken a hacksaw to her and added in 50 or 60 feet to the bow! :hehe

Great video though, it's unusual to see her in the dark like that...

Absolutely beautiful!!  It really goes to show what a wonderful thing we have, and even more amazing that she serves the entire UK!  I saw her on Ryde Pier all lit up and she was such an attractive sight.  GO GO Waverley!!!!! (and of course Monarch!)

Hi thanks for posting your pics.We are privileged enough to own a RIB ( rigid inflatable boat)
Our (myself, wife & kids )most memorable trips to date have included the Millport Illuminations ( a favourite of my Uncle and Dad's Waverley calendar) and Cowal Highland Games.

It is very nostalgic seeing a paddler at night as your senses are far more receptive to the likes of the beat of the paddles the ring of the telegraph and the sense of adventure pre GPS, Radar & VHF. all of which i take for granted now and traditional means are mearly a fall back... times change.

We will be out following the Balmoral or Waverly this year on their night runs this year and very much hope the Waverly will be back on the Millport Illumination run as advertised last year:)

Totally agree about heightened senses regarding paddle beat etc.. Must add an extra dimension though to be viewing from water level as you are able to do. Was the pic of the QE2 taken off Greenock? Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Andy

We do get a slightly different view of her have posted a couple of pics to give an idea.

The pic of her backing away is at Tarbert (loch Fyne) not sure if she is allowed to use this Pier now as there was concerns about the safety of the pier.

Pics are of the QE2 when she departed for the last time (for the second time  :hehe. ) After possibly one of the best firework shows i have ever seen we followed her right down to |Mount Stuart at night
We tucked right in behind her stern for a couple of mins, blimey the wash threw our boat about and the stern towered above us, absolutely Brilliant night!
She has an awesome horn too :)

Nice bit of video - I've always thought she looks her best in the dark.

Nice pictures and videos here. Paddlers always seem to look even more impressive at night!
