Paddle tug
« on: February 20, 2009, 01:30:58 AM »
Hi

Has anyone got any information on the  paddle tug that used to ply the waters in portsmouth harbour?

I remember seeing it as a boy, and remember that it had independantly driven paddle wheels, I think that it was ownd by fleet repair.

Any pointers would be extremely helpfull.

Hi Geoff. How long ago is it since you were a boy?. That would help a bit! The Royal navy used a lot of paddletugs at portsmouth, particularly for handling aircraft carriers. There were also several modern paddle tugs (diesel electric power DIRECTOR class) also operating there. Can you remember, did it have one funnel or two,(in front of each other (steam) or side by side (diesel). Were the funnel(s) tall or small and did they emit a lot of smoke?  Were they black hulled with a buff/yellow upper works (fleet auxiliary). Any of the above plus a rough date would help to pinpoint it! regards, walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

Did the tug look like this one Geoff? If so it's one of the "Director" class diesel/electric tugs which were used for berthing aircraft carriers up till the 1970's...

A hull and plans are available for a Director class tug - Look at: http://www.modelsbydesign.co.uk/model_boats.aspx

Select "Paddle steamers" at the top of the page, and it's the first one listed "Hms Favourite"
