Source of paddler plans
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:01:39 PM »
Hi all

I have just been spending many hours researching a ship that my great-great grandfather served on. In the process I came across this link for the tyne and wear Mitchel archive.
http://www.tyneandweararchives.org.uk/DServe2/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=NaviTree.tcl&dsqField=RefNo&dsqItem=DS.VA/2/5314#HERE
There are many paddle steamer and tug drawings in the archive (all viewable on-line!) most of which I've never heard of. Some of the plans have lines and sections. You need to trawl the list looking at them in turn, but there are some beauties there.

Attn. Walter! there are drawings for PS Zampa of 1874 but she is NOT the DFDS steamer.

All the best

Stuart

I've had a chance to trawl through the list of Mitchell plans - so for your benefit I have identified all of the PADDLER plans on the list. By type I have identified them only loosely (some of the thumbnails are a little small and my eyes hurt now!) Many of the plans have lines and sections - all are available on request and for a very reasonable fee from the archive.

Looking at the thumbnails some of these vessels are really beautiful and would make wonderful model subjects.

Hope this is useful to you

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for doing all the footwork. I looked at the list so I know it took some time to do this list. Much appreciated and a real time-saver.

Indeed a great resource Stuart, but my god what a pain in the neck it is to find anything on the site!! There doesn't seem to be any logical format to the way everything is organised, or maybe it's just me?

Thanks all!
No - it's not just you eddy the site is VERY cumbersome and awkward to navigate BUT the archivist on the telephone at the other end is REALLY helpful!
So there's hope for us yet. Incidentally if you do order a set of plans get the full size copies - the digital copies are very low resolution and do not enlarge well. They are good enough for a general idea, but not to build a model from.

I've got my copies sorted out and am off to what I hope is a good start.
