PS Waverley (The current one!)
« on: December 04, 2008, 05:52:18 AM »
Hi Everybody

Another random question from me i'm afraid, if anyone has a lead to help me find the answer, I would be very grateful!

For sometime now, as some of you know, I have been slowly working on a range of research projects resulting in a collection of plans being drawn up in pretty high accuracy for future, and current modelling projects.

Several of you have already helped me with my Jeanie Deans and P&A Campbells projects, now it is the time of my Waverley one! I thought this drawing had been pretty much finished, as the information I had gathered from various sources is pretty extensive, and the drawing at 1:32 scale on CAD has after much persuasion really started to take shape very well, however I got to working on the run of the various strakes of plating forming the shell of the hull, and became a little confused with the bow....

....to cut a loooong story short, does anyone out there have:

A, A drawing or information concerning the ships stem and stern which would give the height of the prom deck (or main deck for that matter as the are parallel on the centre line) above the baseline at extream stem and stern, or at a defined place near either?

B, A drawing or information which gives the amount of sheer forward and aft so that the above could be calulated?

C, A drawing or information which would show wether the top stake of plating, the one painted offwhite with the maindeck windows in it, wether it gets marginally shallower/less tall/deep towards the bow, as the Jeanie Deans does, but less extream, of wether it is parallel as the Medway Queen is, and as would generally be assumed from looking at the ship casually without looking into it, I have confirmed that all the other strakes do get narrower towards the bow, including the thin one with the yellow stripes on it, so i am suspicious....!

I have spent a great deal of time taking measurements off drawings, to try to get this precise, but seem to come out with a different answer each time, and stared at the fotos tryin to work out point C till my eyes go blurred!!!!

Due to the very satisfactory results of the rest of the drawing, I am keen to get the bow and stern just right, any thoughts or leads gratefully received!

Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy

As you know, I have just finished building the Waverley. I have quite a collection of photographs and must admit that the same view varies in detail within a couple of years.

I should imagine, however, that the hull plating was original, except for the one plate repair which was put on crooked. This feature is built into my hull, courtesy of 'Waverley models'

You state that it's  'the current one'.  so may I suggest you go to the ship and take as many photos (with a ruler in the shot) as possible of the sections you require. That way, it should help you in your quest.

Best of luck

ken

Hey Ken,

Thanks, I think you are right in that the plateing is mostly original, I know that some of the below the waterline is now welded rather than rivetted, at this stage I'm aiming to draw the hull as first built rather than as it now is, I will probally update the drawing later once i've got the 'foundation' stop on....

It was your model, and your excellent photo blog which has inspired me to put some time in on my Waverley project, I have so little time to build, but plenty of time to draw at the moment (nature of my work) so am busy tryin to get everything just right on several designs ready for a time when building can accelerate!

I have done the photo thing on the real ship, sadly the bits I need are or the outside of the hull so not possible to get up close with the ruler as I have for everything on deck! :-(

I am keenly looking forward to seeing pics of your Waverley with its stripes on, hows that going?

Which repair that went crooked is it you refer to? I will look on the underwater photos for it....

Cheers, Andy

The Waverleys winter berth on the Clyde would be the ideal place to get good "side on" photos of the hull above the waterline - Just stand on the far side of the river, rest the camera on the safety fence and take a series of side on shots which can then be accurately pieced together to give a very accurate side view....

Just need to find someone in the Glasgow area to take a series of shots as described.....  The length of the hull is known, so everything else could be scaled from that known measurement - As long as the shots are exact side on views all taken from the same distance.

Mmmm not a bad idea Eddy thanks! just a shame I didn't think of it when I was up there in August!

We did take a couple of pics looking over at the ship from where you describe, but only overall views, I didn't then know this dilemma would arise! I will check them out though and see if they are of any use....

....I have to take a trip for similar purposes to Bristol for Balmoral at some time, maybe a massively extended measuring trip takin in them both is in order!!!!

I am planning to one day replace my current 1:48 Balmoral with a 1:32 one, so am working on plans for that too, eek, I have a lot of building to do to soon!

Cheers, Andy

I hope it's of some use Andy - I sent it via email so you got the full size image that Hans sent. Hopefully that should allow you to enlarge it without losing too much quality?

Many thanks Robert, Seeing that reminded me I have a similar picture of the ship but in its prerebuild condition, facsinating to see that image of it as it is now!

Measuing off of both the phot and the drawing suggests maybe that top strake does very slightly decreasr towars the bow, but only very slightly, so slighty as to not yet be conclusing, will check again when home later....

Thanks all!

Hi Andy

I've taken this picture of the skewed plate. Unfortunately it doesn't show now that there is paint covering it, but it's the one just under the rubber strip around the waterline.

May I suggest you contact Waverley models.co.uk as they bult the hull and mentioned this to me.

All the best

Andy,
There are two booklets which may help you.

"WAVERLEY a legend reborn"      published by Waverley Excursions Ltd in 2003
                ISBN 095051778X
                                            and an earlier one
"Birth of a Legend"   published by the Paddle Steamer preservation society in 1987
                 ISBN 0950517747

some photos in both show hull plates                Sandy
