Too much smoke
« on: September 11, 2008, 05:24:57 AM »
Does anyone have a photo of any ship or paddler or even a photo of a model which comes close to the amount of smoke from this steamer. Taken last year this is the steamship Sir Walter Scott on Loch Katrine on her last weekend before being converted to bio fuel. No more photos will be taken like this one. The engineer told me that they were burning coal from Poland.

Regards

Robert

Hi PD's...Robert ..there are hundreds of snaps of 'turn of the century' old paddlers belching volumes of black smoke in various publications.. :hammer...mind you they hadn't thought of bodies like the Environmental Protection Group.... :whistle

I think Polish coal is brown coal which is a smokey burner...where as black coal is cleaner.......I am sure any reader with naval knowledge could remind us of WW1 stories & snaps of clean burning coal to avoid detection over the horizon from that tell tale smoke plume

Here is a snap of PS Eagle doing one of her stage shows .......these early boilers were normally aspirated ie., no forced draft boiler fan....so the burning/combustion  efficiency would have been low.........Derek

Talking about current, not vintage pics:
I think the picture of the Lake Michigan carferry SS Badger steaming up for this year's passenger season is pretty cool as well:

Thanks all for adding your photos. I think that your smokey steamship photos beat my Sir Walter Scott photo.
