Hi Everybody
My heal dragging Jeanie Deans project is in further need of help!
Any body know what color the railings were painted in her early years? (1931-1935)
The only colour pictures of the 1930's LNER fleet I can find are the excellent paintings by John Nicholson. These all show white railings, but I note that every one of the ships in the books I have with his paintings also have white railings, even those whose I know to have been painted silver as was common at the time!
All the books I have give black and white photos of the ship in its early life, and its so hard to tell the difference between white and silver in a b&w photo! Some look duller than the white stripe under them round the top of the hull, other look as white as it, but not with any consistancy to suggest one year white, and another silver!
Also, can anyone confirm my belief that the ventilators were white not silver, and I assume with red insides, and if the bases of the funnels, and waterway round the edge of the deck were painted brown?
Any help or pointers most appreciated, its getting near time to finish this thing off and get it on the water once and for all!
Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
maybe the photo i have added is helpfull to you, it is from her early year's, the lifeboat david seems to be white but the rail is a bit darker so it could be that it is silver as you said.

Hi Hans,
Many thanks for the photo, thats an excellent shot, ive not seen that one before, also its the best 'railing' photo I have seen yet!
And yes, I think you are right, it looks deffinatly darker than the white of the davit, so could well be silver, its the most deffinative lead yet!
I am glad, I was hoping for silver, I think it looks best for rails....Thanks again!
Best regards,
Andrew

For what it's worth Andrew, I think the photos Hans posted show it was definately silver for the stanchions - One of the plus sides to being colourblind is that I'm not mislead by other colours! I know the photos are B&W, but bear in mind that I'm used to seeing things like that, and only go on tones, not colour...

Thanks for the further photos Hans, that one of the bow is better than a previous one of the same damage I have seen, and deffinatly suggests silver railings to my eyes.
Thanks also Eddy, that is useful insight, nice that we all seem to be finding agreement here, adds a certain confidence! Once I've got the correct stanchions made up, I think its silver they shall be....
Cheers, Andrew

Hi Everybody!
For the first time in a while, my workbench is clear, and with more time than normal on my hands, building looms!
I wonder as I finish of the drawings of Jeanie if anyone out there has photos showing the quarterdeck as it was from new, as after the 1932 improvements.
I am looking for pictures especially showing the capstan and steering gear, and according to the as built GA plans there is something that looks like it might be emergency hand steering to the port of the main steering gear, but i cannot see any detail of this in the photos i have seen.
Any other photos anyone is will to share taken on board, or close ups of the ship in its pre way condition much appreciated.
Many thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I have a grainy colour pic of the "Jeanie" in 32-35 condition (it won't scan well) but it seems to confirm the rails as silver.

Hi Everybody,
I realise this is a long shot, but anyone out there have a photo of the forefoot of Jeanie's hull?
In last weeks bundle of drawings there is a lovely detailed drawing of the stem, but sometimes more information means more questions, and despite many lovely dimensions gien and improvemens to my plans made, i am now having some confusion over the details of the plating/stem arrangements right at the bottom of the hull where the stem meets the keel.
Cheers

I have a picture of Jeanie as Queen of the South having a bow rudder fitted. It's a photocopy of a photocopy I'm afraid but you can see the rivets and the run of the plating lines. I'll scan it on Wednesday when I'm next in the office and send it on to you if you want?

Richard

Hey Richard,
Yes please! It's worth a try....
I have some screen shots taken from footage of that bow rudder instalation, but non of them show the exact part of the bow I need, one of them would do if a scaffold board wasn't in the way! Typical.
Thanks!

Hi Everybody,
A random question, just in case anyone out there knows the answer!
I now have here the Painting Profile of the Jeanie Deans as built.
It unfortunatly only gives colours for the hull and noen of the upperworks, so I will go with our estimates based on B&W pics as previously discussed in this thread.
But, I am surprised to see that the wooden half round moulding on the hull at the top of the black/bottom of the cream part was painted black.
I always thought it would be stained wood, or painted brown as on virtually all other ships.
Anyone know if it stayed black through til the repaint in 1936, or if it maybe became a more usual brown. i think it would have been nicer brown!
Cheers

Hi Andrew,
Could be just a "Fairfield" variation on standard LNER livery, as the rest of the fleet were Inglis built, and I "think", were overhauled there also. At that time Fairfields had the style of raising the level of the black higher towards the bows. (Jeanie, Whipingham, Southsea)

Not a plan, but the tile picture seems to show a brown moulding.....however these pics do have some mistakes in them.
