Help to Locate Boat Designer
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:21:51 AM »
Hey Mates, This boat was sold on e-bay quite some time ago in Europe. It is a manufactured boat and I was wondering if any of you might know by who and if there still around of if plans might be availible. Thanks  T.J.

Hi T.J. there was an American  source for a people powered sternwheeler. When I find the link on my computer I'll put it up on here If I remeber correctly the draughtsman was Atkins. His business closed and then his son took over the supply of his fathers plans and I think he has subsequently died / given up on this venture. There may still be a chance to get them though as I do recall them being not exactly advertised but made available.

cheers

Hey Jim
Thanks for the reply and offering to take the time to look it up for me is this the paddler you were thinking of. I'd really like to find the fellow that bought the boat above or find out who built  it . Thanks again. T.J.

I Just checked the Toronto Public Library and they have 9 books listed by  Harold, "Dynamite" Payson.
Instant boatbuilding with Dynamite Payson ,The dory model book : a woodenboat book, Boat modeling the easy way, Boat modeling with Dynamite Payson, Build the instant catboat, How to build the Gloucester light dory, Keeping the cutting edge, Go build your own boat!, Instant boats . The one listed in the link " Build the New Instant Boats" isn't listed, but is available at Chapters Book stores at $20 CAN. I have read some of his books (they are all very similar), and found his method very simple.
Regards,
Gerald

Thanks Gearld if all else fails then that's the route I'll have to go and I certainally won't have to go far to find research material. Thanks to you guys. I really, really would like to track down that paddlewheel in the picture as it is exactly what I've been Looking for. I thought I had kept the write up on it but can't find it . I'm 99% sure it was sold on E-bay in England and the shipping cost to Canada was out raguse.

Hello all, well my memory isn't too bad after all  ;) http://www.atkinboatplans.com/ look in Miscellaneous Plans and there are three sternwheelers for inspiration. Plus for the more adventurod http://members.aol.com/polysail/HTML/showboat.htm
Still nothing more from the memory banks on the people powered version yet T.J.

cheers
