Hello, dear friends and neigbors,
3 weeks ago I announced to show some photos of my 1 : 48 model of blockade runner "Hope".
The model was build after the Mac Gregor Plan from 1994-1995, it is steam driven. Her dimensions are:
Lenght: 1860mm, breadth of hull 225 mm, displacement 16 kg.
The engine is a two cylinder Regner "Neptune" with 18 mm stroke and 16 mm bore. The boiler`s dimensions are 240 mm lenght and 100 mm diameter with a 35 mm flame tube and 7 crosstubes.
The apperance of the model is very elegant, its stability in the water is good.
The boiler produces plenty of steam, the speed of the boat is appriximately 1,7 m/sec.
The photos inthe water are made at Sinsheim steam meeting, the other photos are made in our garden in summer 2007.

I've been waiting for these pics since you mentioned the Hope some time ago.
Absolutely astounding. You've got to be proud of that. Pure style, grace & elegence on all possible levels.

Hi PD's....& yes Thomas ...this build is to be congratulated...
..however a few questions if I may......
1) What are the two yellow square profile blocks with cylindrical tops immediately aft of the engine?...is the unit on the PORT side piloted by boiler pressure?..does the unit on the STDB side have two gas connections?
2) The Regner "Neptune" engine...I see the engine is a gear reduction to the paddle shaft...what is the reduction ratio?
3) I do not see any insulation under the boiler...is it there?
4) 1.7 m/second is quite fast

Hello,
thank you, I am very pleased, that you like my boat.
Now I will answer the questions, may be I don't know the exact english word for technical expression, but you will understand!
1. The yellow cylinders in front of the engine are the gas-steam control. The lower one on starbord is for steam, the higher one on the port side is for gas, the cylinders are connected together. When the steam pressure reaches 3,5 bar, the flame of the burner will go smaller, so that the presssue will not extend more than 4,0 bar when engine is stopped.
This gas-steam control was made by the german manufacturer Dieter Laspe, he also sells steam engines and equipment.
2. The gear reduction is 1 : 2,2, as I found it is best for propulsion.
3. Long time there was a aluminium sheet between boiler and hull for insulation. Because it was rather corroded, I removed it.
Until now, there is no problem for the hull without this.
4. The fullspeed of 1,7 m/sec is reached, when the pressure is at 4 bar, it correlates with the hull speed (radix from waterline lenght multiplicatet with 4,5). In fact, it is possible to hold a pressure of nearly 3 bar, when the engine is driven by full steam for a longer time.

Hi PD's & thankyou Thomas for your answers...there are many paddleduck members who love steam
1) I sort of guessed the yellow components with my questions...but have not seen an example like this..if you wish to post detail of your gas regulator system & would be welcomed ......I have a French ANTON gas regulator which is physically totally different...but works on the same dual principle
2) the engine to paddle shaft reduction of 2.2:1 ......this reduction appeared lower but understand with 18 mm stroke and 16 mm bore....great torque is achieved & hence the desired ratio
3) replace the reflective sheet ASAP
4) "PS Hope" is not a racing car....but looks great on the water

she's cute! I don't know much about her, but i know she was cornered on 22 October 1864 by USS Eolus, trying to enter Cape Fear River after a sixty-five mile chase off Wilmington. but is there more to her story or not?
