Book database
« on: June 16, 2007, 08:23:21 AM »
For some time now I've wanted to add a searchable database of paddler books....

After writing and rewriting code for about a month, I think I have something that is now usable - It's not online yet, but will be sometime next week (after our paddler day).

It will allow users to enter a book title, short description, Author name, Publisher name, ISBN number, long description, and up to three photographs of the book.

Obviously it's up to our members to add to the list so that it becomes a useful resource - So now is the time to start photographing book covers etc to get things started, especially if you've written and published any suitable books yourself!

I hope to have the database online early next week after final testing....

I forgot to mention, my sincere thanks to Andrew Gray (ajg141) for his help in testing the new software, and for being very patient when I cocked it up! :(

It's good to see a couple of people have added some books to the database, keep it up guys so it grows into a useful resource!

Don't forget you can also add a photograph of the book cover if you have one - It makes it easier for people to spot when they are browsing bookshops if they have an idea of what it looks like.

I noticed that the length of the fields for the book title and the short description were a little short for some entries - I've now increased those a bit. The title can now be 100 characters (it was 80 chars), and the short description can be 160 characters (it was 125 chars).

That's just about as large as I can go and still keep the page formatting within reasonable limits

Thanks Eddy, the database is a really good idea.
I have spent a few minutes on the scanner  , and edited my "short descriptions" so they make sense!

Thanks Chris - If the program chopped off the book title of any of your entries, you can edit it to add the missing characters too ;)

For those that haven't taken a look yet, the Book Database is growing steadily - Paul Jordan (PJ), has added a lot of entries over the last couple of days, and there are already quite a few books listed that I've never heard of.

Thanks Paul...
