Paddle Steamer 'Rothsay Castle' (200 tons) left Liverpool on Wednesday August 17, 1831. The ships destination was Beaumaris in North Wales, 50 miles away.
But the Rothsay Castle never arrived as it ran aground on a sandbank 6 miles away in a storm. Of the 150 passengers on board only 22 survived. A drunken captain and an unseaworthy vessel, despite new boilers.
