Winter projects?
« on: November 04, 2006, 11:17:41 PM »
So, now that the winter has almost arrived for those of us in the northern hemisphere, and it's getting too damned cold to stand at the side of the lake sailing, what do you guys have planned as a winter project?

I've just made a start on a Firth of Forth paddle ferry for a friend up in Scotland - The boat is called Sir William Wallace and was one of the boats that ferried people and vehicles across the Forth before the road bridge was built in the early sixties. I'll post some pictures of the build so far in a few days...

So, come on guys, tell us what your up to...

Well, for a start I have dusted off my CITY OF BRISTOL and started on the deck structures and masts, I am enjoying working in good quality mahogany again, thanks to the generosity of one of our club members.

Also I have loads of new plans to drool over thanks to good friends for supplying them!.  Cheers for now walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

I'm planning on building Lulonga - have ordered the plans, and taken lots of pics of one that I am trying to refit a motor to. I have all the original articles, but its surprising how much magazine photo reproduction has come on in 10 years! The photos in the articles are quite difficult to see any detail.

I've started by stripping down my Victoria and cementing in some ballast (looks better than lumps of lead sitting on the floor :)).   Next comes the process of putting back the panels and furniture removed for ballasting and re-fitting the engine and boiler.  It's probably going to be too cold to steam her on the lake :(  but a bench run may be achieved in january :D .

It's great to hear that a few people are actually building, so I hope you'll post some photos to keep us all up to date with your progress?

I hate it when someone says I'm building so and so, and then you hear no more about for two years until suddenly you get photos of a completed model - It's much better to share the build so others can learn from our experiences, even if that means we occassionally show that we're fallible and have cocked something up! :)

I'll do my bit and post some pics of the build of Sir William Wallace in a few days....

I know exactly what you mean Jim - I often start something and then finish it 5 or 6 years down the line! :)

The point I was trying to make is that people learn a lot more by seeing how things are done, rather than just being presented with a finished model, and thinking I could never do that!

Most of this month is spent buying sunscreen and sunglasses and repairing models from overuse in Melbourne.
My Captain Sturt has just had a 12v 7amp battery go through it's side due to a stupid women driver swerving when going to the lake last Sunday. This is what I have to repair over our Summer.
PS. I am also continuing with the big PS Pevensey.

I've started a thread on the Forth car ferry I'm building for a friend, you can find it here: http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2489

So, that's my current build, whose going to be next? :)

I'm building a 1:87 display model of the D & R Boney for a law firm in St. Louis, Missouri

Another Dravo 5600 Viking class. These boats have been popular to model the past couple of years.
