Database problems!
« on: October 29, 2006, 10:00:29 AM »
We are currently experiencing problems with the database server that occassionally results in an error saying: Critical error: Could not connect to the database

Our host is aware of the situation and is investigating the cause, hopefully this should be fixed soon....

Hi Eddy,

First off let me say a GREAT BIG thank you for all the hard work you have put into arranging the Downloads section, it is now so very easy to access articles.
 :bravo  :no1  :respect  :respect2

Just to let you know...apart from experiencing the above DATA BASE Access error several times....I have also experienced problems with TYPE SIZING (see my latest post under steam) where the colour changes ok, but the TYPE size does not...also the Emoticons do not allways load up correctly...some appear...others remain with blank boxes, having alternative text markers only.

I am assuming that these issues are all related, and that you will get them sorted when the main error problem is resolved...however, I thought it best to let you know.

Best regards.

Sandy. :sunglasses  :computer

Thanks Sandy - it was alot of work, but hopefully it was worth it?

The errors connecting to the database are becomming a real pain - Yes they are also the cause of the other issues you raised. I've reported the problem (again!) to our host, so we'll see what comes of it this time.... Hopefully they will eventually find the problem.

Eddy

If its any consolation. you are not the only one experiencing problems with the phpBB software! Another Forum that I frequent (or try to) repeatedly gives me the Database Error. Some evenings I just give up, which is frustrating as its a support forum for a variety of Linux I am trying to use. I sort of assumed that it is traffic related, but if this forum is getting it, then I think that is unlikely. Maybe you should query the phpBB people rather than the host?

Regards,

Barrie

Well, after really losing my temper about the problems with connecting to the database, everything seems to be okay - At least I haven't experienced the error for the last 12-14 hours or so...

My host still says there isn't a problem that they can find - But it does seem strange to me that the error has now apparently fixed itself! ;)

I've had that message come up a few times...I pressed refresh and it fixed itself!

Have a rest Eddy, you've done a fantastic job with the download manager and everything!

Take a time out and someone shout him a cruise on a paddler!

Our hosts database server threw a wobbler this morning and had to be rebooted Derek - Since then everything appears to be working fine.

The forum would not log on for me this morning.  It required me to log in but would not recognize my pass word. Got a new pass word still the same problem then it cut me off for trying too many times. said to wait a half hour but still got the same message hours later.  Finally this evening I got a third pass word and got in.  Frustrating.   :rant  :rant  :rant  :sob  :shoot

The cookie file that stores your user details on your computer can become corrupted Bill, sometimes even overwriting it by changing your password won't cure it....  In that situation the best option is to delete it and let your system create a new one.

A few people have also reported problems after upgrading to IE 7

Anyway, I'm glad you eventually got it sorted...

Well Eddy I'm not sure what the problem was. Been having really wet weather here. North of me was the worse with lots of flooding. May have been something with our lines over the night.

My day doesn't really start well unless I have my morning fix of

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Practial machinest forum (really great machining related forum + lots of other great information)

and my morning Puddleducks.

Computers can be really quirky things at times Bill - Who knows why some of these problems occur? Seems to me that sometimes the computer just says I'm having an off day and I'm gonna stuff ya!  :?

Our database server crashed totally earlier today, so Paddleducks was offline for almost 4 hours! :(

Our host has advised us that their engineers will have to carry out further work on the database server over the next few days, so there may be other periods when the message forum etc will be offline.

Unfortunately this is beyond our control, so please bare with us. Hopefully the work they are doing will resolve all the previous problems we've been experiencing so it will be worth it in the long run...
