German paddlesteamers
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:05:10 AM »
The Swiss & Italian site
http://www.swissitalianpaddlesteamers.com
mentions the German paddlesteamer on Bodensee (Lake Konstanz), as it cruises to Swiss ports.  There are others.

In May 06, I photographed PS Freya in the distance at Kiel, posted lower in the thread.

In our links section Roderick there is a fantastic website on the German paddlers....'The Legend of Steamboatin' Deutschland' or something like that. It's really good and has links to all the remaining boats sites.

I found all this out because I have relatives in Germany and thought I may have been able to get some information or photos...but they're a bit further than where my rellies are!

Sean's clue was very helpful, I found the site, leading to a further link
The boat which I photographed was PS (dampfschiff) Freya.  Even in the enlarged scan, the name on the paddlebox is hard to read: probably 'Raddampfer Freya', but possibly 'Nederlander Freya'.
I guess that raddampfer is German for 'wheel steam', ie paddlesteamer.  Nederlander had been an earlier name.

In the links page, go to research, then on page 3 you will find the German link.
Or go here directly:
www.paddleducks.co.uk/forum/links.php?func=show&id=17

In turn, it has links to lots of steam and ferry sites:
www.schaufelraddampfer.de/english/links/elinks.htm

and a section on German boats, which covers Freya under Nordsee/Baltic
www.schaufelraddampfer.de/english/german/ecoast.htm

Hi PD's,

there are some, not very much but quiet enough paddle steamers in Germany.

1. The Elbe fleet at Dresden with 5 steamers.
2. PS Freya
3. PS Kaiser Wilhelm near Minden
4. PS Hohentwiel at lake Constance

and in some museums you can find also something, as far as i know there are the

1. Oskar Huber a huge tug boat at the river shipping museum at Duisburg
2. Ersekcsanad ex "Ruthof" at the Danube shipping museum at Regensburg
3. a similar boat at Magdeburg east Germany
4. PS Mannheim ex "PS Mainz" this is similar to the PS Goethe from KD shipping company this steamer accommodate the Mannheim river shipping museum

For further questions please ask, i will help as much as i can.

Kind regards Hans

It would definitely be the FREYA. I posted some  information about her engines in the rope drive thread (no pun intended) a week  or so ago. She is really PS/PMV FREYA

It does seem that the boat which I photographed    was PS (dampfschiff) Freya. I'll find the photo, confirm with the website, and    attach it to an edited version of this post, probably on    Saturday.

I have always missed the Dresden fleet, because of travelling in winter.  On my 2006 trip, I could pick up Swiss fleets in April at the start of the new season.  I am visiting Dresden in January, as an extension of a China logging-railway tour which had to run in winter.  I miss the last of the holiday cruises by 3 days; there is then a gap to March.  I found three useful sites with information:
http://paddlesteamers.info/ElbeDresden.htm
www.kingswearcastle.co.uk/Kurort%20Rathen.htm
www.saechsische-dampfschiffahrt.de

There is lots of material on the web re the Dresden fleet, but I am finding no photos in Paddleducks.
On Thurs.9.1.14, I followed the river by train and crossed by local ferry at Bad Schandau.
On Fri.10.1, I photographed seven of the nine surviving paddlesteamers, and got a glimpse of the shipyard with a diesel paddle vessel and a mystery one.  I don't know where the other two steamers were hiding, as the fleet was now in winter layover.  I missed the brief Christmas - New Year season, which finished on 6.1.
I felt at home on the Elbe: different vegetation, but the same swift current (fiercer than the Murray?), not deep (1.6 m on Friday), and with port & starboard navigation markers to keep boats off mudbanks.  It isn't as busy as the Rhine (or even the Danube).
My photos will show: (PS paddlesteamer = RD Radampfer)
PS Krippen
PS Diesbar
PS Meissen
PS Stadt Wehlen
PS Pillnitz
PS Pirna
PS Dresden
I also got the two small launches, and twolarge modern diesel ships.  The two at the boatyard are not on the datasheets.

The third link provides a data sheet on each vessel, and some information on river depths.

http://www.saechsische-dampfschiffahrt.de/english/schiffe/historische-schaufelraddampfer-diesbar.html

Today, some general photos.  I'll do the fleet set when I get home.  The barge on Friday I had photographed at Bad Schandau on Thursday.

Here are two angles of PS Krippen, which was moored at the upstream end of the seven, and was the vessel in the general view posted earlier.

Now to the fifth: PS Pillnitz.
I saw two cargo barges on the Elbe: not as frequent as on the Rhine.
