Suggestions please on books
« on: October 22, 2006, 04:38:08 AM »
Hello all, as you may gather the fact that I am posting a new request for suggestions, the steam bug has bitten. does anyone have a definitive book on their shelf that they would recommend to a steam novice? I know of one  (title escapes  me for now) published by Traplett which apparently is a concise introduction to steam. Now as it stands I'd love to say that this desire would bring me into the realms of paddlewheeler ownership, sadly it is more likey a launch along the lies of the Windermere "Branksholm" that would be my first foray. Yes Derek i know you want the details of Allans "Branksholm" in the Edinburgh Model Boat Club Gallery 13 we have not forgotten you, just have not met up with him for sometime now. Any suggestions with a small review would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Jim

Jim,  I'm not sure if this book is till in print. My copy is a 1974 reprint but likely still available some where.  Model Stationary and Marine Steam Engines  by K.N. Harris. It is a MAP publications Book.  Covers several types of steam engines including some basic deign and construction information.  Most of this information is near 100 years old but still useable.

A couple of members in my club have models of the Branksholme Jim, and it's very tender to say the least!

I'd recommend you choose a different model with a little more beam, especially for a first foray into steam.... Choose a Windermere steamer by all means, just pick a slightly beamier one than the Branksholme - That's my two penneth worth! ;)
~ Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ~

:D  :D  :great  :trophy  :no1

Ok chaps, back from dinner.

Jim......'Scale Model Ship Propulsion' by Tom Gorman...Chatham Publishing.

'Scale Model Steamboats' by Phillip Vaughan Williams...TRAPLET publication...this may be the one you were referring to.

A new book....'Model Marine Steam' by Stan Bray...Special Interests Model Books...publication.

All these are good for the subject.

All can be obtained via AMAZON or from most good model outlets...like Model Dockyard, or Westbourne Models.

Hope this helps......Can't have you slipping out from the net...can we?    :music  :hehe  :hehe

Best regards.

Sandy.

I own a book on steam engineering, covers almost all kidns of areas. It was written for those sitting their steam engineers certificates in Australia. It cost me $65 but it's a great antique book. Probably no help to you as it is australian.

There is another book I wanted to get called sssssteam (or something of the like) It was a pretty thick antique book and I'd say it covered almost everything. Unfortunately I am not near either of these books and I cannot give you correct titles or authors. I can tell you though the first book (Something like Enginemasters Key) was made during the 'White Australia' policy as there is a very interesting note on the wages paid to the author, binders etc etc etc in regards to this policy.
