HMS ARISTOCRAT (ex Talisman)
« on: October 01, 2006, 05:55:34 AM »
In the late 1990s an american quarterly model magazine PLASIC SHIP MODELER did an article on modelling HMS ARISOCRAT (armed clyde paddle steamer TALISMAN). Does anyone have a copy of this article, or a friend who takes this magazine?. I would dearly love a copy of the article!!. thanks in anticipation, Walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

Hi Martin, thanks for the book info- I have already got it. As you probably gathered, I have had a love affair with TALISMAN/ARISTOCRAT since I had my one and only trip on her in 1955 as a 14 year-old.
The info I am after relates to her war service. Her camouflage scheme, such things as did her coolours change. Photos of that period used different negative film which were insensitive to certain colours hence are misleading. The biggest problem is her armament makeup and layout. I have several different sources which give similiar armament, but different layout! I had hoped that the article in PLASTIC SHIP MODELLER might have cleared it up for me! Never mind, lifes a minefield! I will keep on searching Thanks again, walter.

Ahhhhh!

I have an interest in this one for a different reason.  I am researching the history of the London & North Eastern Railway and of course the Talisman fits right in there.

I have an interest in paddlers from growing up on the River Murray and having several ancestors afloat.

Talisman neatly combines the two interests.  I desperately want to build the Talisman, but not yet.

The was an article printed in issue 22 of Plastic Ship Modeller, Walter... I believe it was in September 2000.

The address I have for the magazine is:

Plastic Ship Modeler
P.O Box 2183
Arvada, CO 80001-2183
USA

Apparently back issues of the magazine are available if you write to the publishers...

Hi all

This is really for Martin - hope I'm not seen as hi-jacking the thread.

If you are researching LNER or NBR Clyde steamers, you will be interested in these books (if you don't already have them).

CRAIGENDORAN STEAMERS by Alan Brown.   The 2nd (1979) edition is the one to go for.   Not aimed at modellers, but a very good history of the services operated by NBR/LNER from Craigendoran and their ships.  Plenty of copies in abeboks and appears frequently on ebay (there's one on ebay now, at £1.99 but no link from me as there's only an hour to go)

THE CRAIGENDORAN STORY by George Stromier.   I haven't got this one myself yet, but it was published by the Clyde River Steamer Club and the author was a well-respected writer so it should be good.  There are copies in abebooks, but it hardly ever appears on ebay.

And a piece of TALISMAN memorabilia,  located in Australia

I won't bid against you, but I do wood burning
I would be interested in doing this ship if I could find a better picture.
These are  a sample of my work.

I didnt get it!

What sort of picture are you after???  Do you want photos?  I have a number of photos of Talisman which I might be able to scan.

Martin, regarding your LNER interest, I live about 10 miles from the Darlington Railway Museum which houses the Ken Hoole collection of LNER memorabilia and documents specificaly on the railway histories in the north east of England, if there is anything you wish to know about our railways , especialy Darlington built locos it will be housed there and i will be happy to check it out fot you.  (They have some excellent photos of railway steamers and dock paddle tugs)  Regards, walter.

Thanks Walter,

I apologise for my slow reply, but too much happening and I have not been onto this forum for a while.

I think I am pretty much OK for info at the moment.  I have a set of books on the railways which cover most things.  I am concentrating more on the railway own ships at the moment.
I have an interest in the ex GER and LNER passenger ships plying the channel between Harwich and europe (RMS Vienna, Antwerp, Brussels, Malines etc)
and the ex-GCR ships sailing from Immingham (SS Accrington, Bury etc.)

I would dearly love to build a model of one of those (and of course the Talisman - but having difficulty regarding hull) if I could find suitable plans.
