Devastating news!

For those who have a keen intrest in paddlers its time for to break the news. Just the other day the PS Golden City located in Ballarat Victoria was burnt down to nothing.

The 121 year old boat was undergoing restoration and due for relaunching by the end of this year when tragically the shed it was in was burnt to the ground at 3 in the morning.

All that now remains of the boat are the two wheels standing like tombstones out of the piles of charcoal.

Golden City has been under restoration since 2000 with about $30,000 aus spent so far.

She was the only remaining Lake Wynduree paddler out of a fleet of fifteen. The fleet were all much smaller boats than the murray river boats and were used to ferry passengers around to various parts of the lake.

The community is devasted, as was my family when we watched (and recorded) the article on the news, and I found out my friends really did care when txt messages came flooding in telling me of the event.

The Paddle Steamer Society resposnible for restoration now says to replicate the boat could cost anywhere above $120,000 aus dollars but the boat would not be the same. Premier Steve Bracks of the Victorian Labour party said he would do what he could to help.

It is a sad day when our history is destroyed, sadder still when it is the last of its kind.

RIP PS Golden City, may the embers of life forever burn in your engine.

Spelling in this article may not be correct when it comes to place names. please excuse me for this.

This was the first PS I saw (if you don't count the wreck at Indented Heads).
It was a highlight of a trrip to Ballarat in the 50's I seem to remember a second boat as well, I will look through some of dad's old photos.
