Modern Technology ?

Hello all, as quoted by Towboatjoe on the "Source to the sea" thread

Why did they ever make two different VHS formats anyway.  I thought that was the principle of phasing out Betamax (which was a better quality recording system). Just think of all the great videos we could share around the world and not worry about compatibility.  Heck there's five different types of DVD recording modes and only a couple will play on most all DVD players.

A word of warning to some computer users out there. I inadvertently inserted a DVD into my DVD compatible CD Drawer on the desktop computer. I had never done this before! It was the wrong Region. I did not know of the regions an their non-parity. Now my computer will not play the ones for this region (1, I believe)  as it is apparently irrevocable. Now we have various DVD players throughout the house and I'm lucky if I can get any of them to work at any time. Sound familiar?  Then of course with the kids being able to lose anything very easily and the dog being particularly fond of eating the lovely crunchy plastic of these devices I'm also lucky if I can find a remote which will operate at all. Come back the simplicity of pushing a button on the fascia after levitating oneself off the sofa.

cheers

A big AMEN to that.
Ever noticed how things worked so much better before the intervention of "better technology". Used to be you coud fix a componet. Now every thing's disposable. :crash

Jim,

There are programs out there (the Internet) that will re-set the region for your CD/DVD player. Let me know if you want assistance to find one.

Hello all, thanks to Barrie for the offer of assistance in recitfying my wayward DVD player on the computer. being honest about it Barrie, I seldom have the need to use it and when I did try the picture quality was pretty grim. Thanks for the offer anyway.

cheers

Jim
