Radiant Burners for Live Steam

Hi all,
Has anyone had any experience with Radiant Burners for Live Steam Boilers? I am playing around with them too try to inprove the steaming and fuel consumption on my Launch Lily.

Hi Gerald,
Think, you're speaking about ceramic burners,so far I remember the
Steam Launch "Lily" on point I don't know, which boiler nor the size
of your boiler,a small sketch,drawing will most probably help.

Hi Gerald .
Interesting subject, I am also playing about with different burners both ceramic and slotted tube burners, are you using commercial available one or are you starting from scratch. I found jet size and position critical also primary air control. Secondary air to the firebox is worth looking at as well enough for good ventilation, not to much to cool the flame. Any pictures of “Lily” and your steam plant

Hi My burner is a copper tube burner with holes drilled in the top, I have covered it with 1/8 space above the flame with fine mesh stainless steel mesh. I will try to borrow a camera and upload a shot of it.

Hi Gerald.
Here is a picture of my latest burner and gas tank for my steam launch. The main tube is 3/8”bore steel with 7 slots in 3/8 apart, you can see the primary air adjustment sleeve it has four 1/8 holes drilled through sleeve and jet tube the sleeve is locked by 10BA screw after adjustment. It burns well in the boiler on the bench but not been tested in sailing conditions yet so time will tell. :lol:

Hi Eric,
That looks great, Try to find some fine mesh stainless steel, and form a cover over the top with about 1/8 inch space above the flames. The mesh will glow a nice orange or white colour, radiating HEAT. I have found some sites on radiant poker burners on the web they are almost all for the live steam trains, but will work in boats too. The Ceramic Burners look good, but the commercial ones are above my price range and I have not found a source of cheap ceramic material to try to make my own, plus I have been told that they crack if they get wet and as I run my exhaust up the stack I do get some condensate down on the burner. I am still trying to borrow a camera to get some shots of Lily and her boiler to upload.

Hi Gerald.
Thanks for your comment, I will give your stainless steel mesh suggestion a try I have non in my scrap box so will have to shop around. I have made one or two Ceramic Burners using old radiants from LPG gas fires not 100% yet but I will go back to the idea at some time. If you still have the web sites for the radiant poker burners bookmarked could send the link pleas.
