Greetings from Istanbul/Turkey, I have a question
« on: June 21, 2005, 04:55:36 PM »
Dear Members,
I am an 37 years old private individual ship modeler from The
Istanbul .I am one of the Turkish Naviga's board of directors member.
I would like to thank to my friend Mr Henri Hansen who introduced
me this great group.

I have been searching for the one of the Ottoman Empire's Sultan's
steam paddler yacht which is an wooden British made despatch
vessel 'Aviso' called "Izzeddin" for about a year.

For all of my afforts and as far as I know that the records of the
builder company is not available.

I found an general ship plan of the same period from the Greenwich's
National Maritime museum with an only little differece at the draft
and I planked the hull at the 1/100 scale.there is no superstructure
drawings..

I have all the historic photographs and a fairly built model at the
turkish maritime museum which built from the lost orjinal plans 30
years ago.I cleaned the model and took every measurements

Do I have the change about sharing these information ,photos of the
building process and specially getting answers for my questions from
this group?

Thank You,

Yours sincerely

Mr Tamer OZKAN

Dear Tamer (Mr.OZKAN)

On behalf of everybody here, a very warm welcome to the Paddleducks
forum. You have already met Walter who is one of our resident
experts on paddle steamers and probably has one of the best libraries
on this subject I know of.

I too wish to learn more about Turkish paddle steamers and would love
to see photos of actual vessels and models. So please feel free to
post any pictures you may have.

I personally am interested in a 180' sidewheeler which found her way
eventually to Turkey. "Worthing Belle" ex "Diana Vernon" (Barclay
Curle, Glasgow 1885) was sold to Turkish owners in 1913 who renamed
her "Touzla." She served as a gunboat and was apparently sunk during
World War I. Salvaged and refloated she went on to serve as a ferry
until being scrapped in 1926.

I have collected many images of this vessel during her service in
British waters but I have no image of her as "Touzla" or after 1913.
I have spent three years researching this ship and am about to
commence construction on a definitive model of her as she appeared in
1907 but I would love to see what she looked like under her Turkish
owners and learn more of her later history. Any help you are able to
provide would be very much appreciated.

Information on this ship can be seen on Tom Lee's website at:
http://freespace.virgin.net/tom.lee/worthing.htm

and also Valerie Martin's excellent tribute at:
http://www.findonvillage.com/0656_worthing_belle.htm

I do hope you will be a regular contributor and help us learn more
about Turkish paddle steamers as the Bosphorous Sea has a fascinating
Maritime history and has been home to many wonderful ships.

So please do not hesitate to ask for information, we'd be delighted
to help in any way possible, since that is the true purpose and
spirit of this forum.

Welcome again and very best regards

Dear Mr Jordan,
Thank you for your kind reply.I will be happy to find all answers
about Turkish related boat questions, pictures, history whatever
present.

I will be search the vessel " Tuzla " at the naviga club, museum ,and
some private collectors who are old enough to come the meetings.

As far as I know these kind of research needs some time .I will try
to find them as quick as possible
Thanks again
Tamer

Centaur was one of four tugs built in the 1960s (in Bremerhaven,I belive. I
will check that.)

Tenace (Class name)
Malabar
Centaur
Amsterdam(civilian)

The first three went to the french navy
Amsterdam wrapped a hauser around her propellor during a heavy North Sea tow
& destroyed her gearbox (the MOST expensive part, of course) was beached anid
scrapped.
Centaur was sold to the Turkish navy & renamed DARICA. I only have one photo
of her and in it she looks pinkish tan. I Don't think it's accurate.
Tenace and Malabar remain in service with the French Navy. They are serving as
fisheries patrol, oil spill control, & diver platforms as well as deep water
tugs.
I am currently modeling Malabar

Hello Tamer OZKAN. I too have an interest in Ottoman warships and I
find the following book very helpfull. Check though, as I think it
may be an English translation of a Turkish book!) TYHE OTTOMAN STEAM
NAVY. BY BERND LANGENSEIPEN AND AHMED GELERYUZ. translated by JAMES
COOPER. published by Conway Maritime press 1995. ISBN 0 851776108, I
recollect she was a very pretty little paddler and I seem to remember
there were several photos of her in the book. Wishing you success,
Walter.
