Dear Tamer (Mr.OZKAN)
On behalf of everybody here, a very warm welcome to the Paddleducks
forum. You have already met Walter who is one of our resident
experts on paddle steamers and probably has one of the best libraries
on this subject I know of.
I too wish to learn more about Turkish paddle steamers and would love
to see photos of actual vessels and models. So please feel free to
post any pictures you may have.
I personally am interested in a 180' sidewheeler which found her way
eventually to Turkey. "Worthing Belle" ex "Diana Vernon" (Barclay
Curle, Glasgow 1885) was sold to Turkish owners in 1913 who renamed
her "Touzla." She served as a gunboat and was apparently sunk during
World War I. Salvaged and refloated she went on to serve as a ferry
until being scrapped in 1926.
I have collected many images of this vessel during her service in
British waters but I have no image of her as "Touzla" or after 1913.
I have spent three years researching this ship and am about to
commence construction on a definitive model of her as she appeared in
1907 but I would love to see what she looked like under her Turkish
owners and learn more of her later history. Any help you are able to
provide would be very much appreciated.
Information on this ship can be seen on Tom Lee's website at:
http://freespace.virgin.net/tom.lee/worthing.htmand also Valerie Martin's excellent tribute at:
http://www.findonvillage.com/0656_worthing_belle.htmI do hope you will be a regular contributor and help us learn more
about Turkish paddle steamers as the Bosphorous Sea has a fascinating
Maritime history and has been home to many wonderful ships.
So please do not hesitate to ask for information, we'd be delighted
to help in any way possible, since that is the true purpose and
spirit of this forum.
Welcome again and very best regards
