Gdevenn cobblers. Sorry its me again, the wifes away on holiday and
the devil makes work for idle computers. I have just made a start on
catalogueing my mountain (50 yeare) of model and ship magazines) and
came across an article you may not have seen. In MODEL SHIPWRIGHT
number 14 (DEC 1975) there is a long article by R T SEXTON on Murray
river paddlers with some very well drawn plans including lines,
sections and internals of the following: 1. Sidewheeler TOLARNO. 2.
Wool barge UNION. 3. Royal Mail steamer (as rebuilt after boiler
explosion) TYRO. 4 TYRO as built (Smaller superstructure) These are
well printed plans which will easily enlarge I think that the
publishers still have full size plans available if you dont want to
enlarge them. Cheers for now and dont let your lager (its NOT beer)
get warm! walter.

Good day to you my fine Antipodean friend. As you probably know,
TYRO was built by Samual SHIRTCLIFFE (later changed to SHETLIFFE) in
1872 after the sternwheeler QUEEN. Built of 2 inch red gum on iron
frames with upper strakes and deck from NZ kauri. In 1897 she was on
the MAIL RUN from Murray bridge to Mannum when there was a large
explosion, blowing out the firebox wrecking the engines, wheelhouse
and adjacent cabins. In the enquiry it was stated that the steward
was blown 100 feet, with his galley! No one was killed. The lines for
the plans were taken froma builders half model found in Shetcliffes
old Goobwa home, NAILED TO A WINDOW LINTEL apparently it required an
axe to get it off !! (It could only happen in Australia ) As for
Royal mail ship, any vessel commisioned to carry mail on a regular
basis is entitled to be RMS. I can only assume she was commisioned as
such from launching. As for point 5, well, my brother has foregone
his birthright and become an Aussie and everyone knows that the
coloured water served "over there" is just a boys drink with the
colour and taste of lager!. Hope the above throws a bit of light on
the subject for you. (By the way, the article states that SHETCLIFFE
may have lengthenrd TYRO somewhat. All the best, Walter.

Did you fellers know that from the start TYRO had an onboard
HARMONIUM " for the entertainment of passengers" -- shades of
Atlantic liners! On her commisioning run she carried 150 passengers
on an excursion. The above from a newspaper reporter on board. Cheers
again, say hello to Skippy for me. Walter.
