Position of sidewheeler paddles

Hi PJ,
Thanks for the sites. A question: some of the side wheelers have the
paddles amidships and yet some of the photos I have just been
looking at show the paddles positioned more towards the stern.
Is it a matter of balance: boiler/paddlewheels or just design?

I've always understood that proper design placed the wheels at the
calculated high point of the bow wave at service speed....
