Most were manually lowered with counter weights to make it easier for
a man to lower them. The newer boats have hydraulic ones, but chances
are there won't be the same pressure of lowering the stacks since
each stack would need a couple rams to lower it. There would probably
be a little twisting pressure on a spreader bar plus you have to be
sure there proper clearance for the spreader bar to miss the wheel
house and other obstacles when lowering.
I've watch the American Queen lower and raise hers a few times, and
though they're activated at the same time, one always tilts more than
the other. She has rams on each side of each stack for raising and
lowering, plus she's so big the pilot house also lowers along with
radars and other things. She's really something to watch coming up
the Ohio River. By the way, she's 418 feet long.
